Girls Inc. of Lynn Volunteer Job Description

VOLUNTEER CATEGORY: Senior College Mentor

COMMITMENT TIME: Minimum of 9-month commitment for 90 minutes per week

(early September to early May)

Must also be available to attend required Mentor Training and Orientation in August

GOAL: Develop a supportive relationship with a program participant to promote and improve academic achievement, healthy behaviors, social skills, goal setting and career awareness.

HOW: Meet weekly with one high school senior girl at Girls Inc. of Lynn from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Assist mentee in setting weekly goals and planning tasks to support her as she navigates the college application process.


 Sincere desire to help teenage girls achieve personal and educational goals

 Available for a minimum nine-month commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with a youth/mentee

 Ability to maintain regular weekly meetings with mentees and be on time

 Available to attend mentor training and orientation sessions in August before meeting mentees; attend ongoing mentor training and support sessions

 Ability to communicate with teenagers and adults openly and non-judgmentally

 Strong listening skills; ability to establish relationship based on equal responsibility and respect

 Interest in needs and concerns of youth to assist them with navigating the college process

 Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives

 Awareness of personal and cultural bias and sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural, or racial backgrounds

 Ability to recognize and maintain boundaries with teens and adults

 Experience with youth, preferably experience working with girls

 Ability to be a role model and advocate for program participants

 Establish positive relationships with mentees based on mutual trust and respect

 Help mentees with development of life skills, such as positive attitude toward learning and school, decision making, goal setting and conflict resolution

 Help mentees access resources by acting as a “broker” to help mentees become aware of community and educational resources

 Help increase mentee’s ability to interact with diverse people

 Collaborate with mentee to set weekly goals and plan tasks related to the college process

 As possible, provide mentees with information and resources to help them meet their goals

 Assist mentees in solving educational related and other problems that interfere with mentees success at school and/or the college process

 Keep program coordinator informed regarding any concerns, issues problems or trends

 Complete weekly one-page mentor report form
