Did you know that approximately 18,000 Chicago Public School students were identified as homeless during the 2016-2017 academic school year?

Chicago HOPES for Kids empowers these homeless students to succeed academically. With the goal of sustainability, Chicago HOPES for Kids collaborates with schools, shelters and communities to provide after school support for students living in homeless shelters throughout Chicago.

Our after-school program is an opportunity to provide academic support, and build relationships with children K-5 who are experiencing homelessness. As an after-school volunteer you will empower students through learning, and have fun along the way! Volunteers assist in facilitating our easy-to-follow curriculum . The curriculum includes:

  • 40 minutes of homework help
  • 20 minutes of literacy support
  • 25 minutes of enrichment (a read aloud, paired with a corresponding activity)

Volunteers will work with 1 to 3 children at a time depending on the number of students at the site.

The program takes place within the shelter at sites Uptown, Austin, Englewood, North Lawndale, South Shore, and Back of the Yards.

Volunteering with Chicago HOPES for Kids will give you the satisfaction of helping and guiding a child's academic and personal development! We also partner with DIVVY to provide our volunteers access to the bikes! If you're interested in volunteering or would like to know more about the program, please contact us at volunteer@chicagohopesforkids.org or visit our website at www.chicagohopesforkids.org!

The program takes place in one of our partnering shelters for a designated two-hours, Monday-Thursday. We ask that volunteers select a site and consistent day of the week that they will volunteer for the entirety of the program semester. Through your commitment, you will build stronger relationships with the students we serve.
