Description

Help grow the next generation of community development leaders in the Pittsburgh region as they work towards people-powered change!

Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG) is seeking a service-oriented self-starter to lead a cohort of seven AmeriCorps VISTA members building the region’s economic development infrastructure. The VISTA Leader will cultivate a community of learning and support to stimulate the shared growth of VISTA members during their service journey. The Leader will also be responsible for the collection and distillation of qualitative and quantitative data to fulfill reporting requirements and publicize community impact. As recruitment representatives, they will leverage working relationships with local volunteer and educational networks to promote VISTA service opportunities and assist site supervisors in the selection and on-boarding process. Throughout, the VISTA Leader will document useful practices to form policies and procedures, shaping reasonable member expectations and improving program sustainability. To learn more about the AmeriCorps VISTA Leader program, read the Leader Overview on the VISTA Campus website

Note that the VISTA Leader’s term will start on September 4, 2018 and end on September 3, 2019. If you have any questions, contact Aaron Salituro at asalituro@pcrg.org or (412) 391-6732.

About Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group VISTA

The PCRG VISTA program sponsors seven VISTA members working at six sites for a more prosperous and equitable region. As the area’s foremost convener of grassroots organizations, PCRG aims to prepare Greater Pittsburgh’s next generation of community leaders. The proximity of these groups to the people they serve enables VISTAs to tackle poverty head on as they confront the rapidly changing landscape of Pittsburgh-area neighborhoods and municipalities.

In some areas, rapid growth threatens to displace low to moderate income residents, while other neighborhoods suffer from long-standing decay and under-investment. PCRG VISTAs placed with PCRG and its community partners aim to build the programming, resources, and organizational capacity necessary to capitalize on these changes. Not surprisingly, their assignments reflect the remarkable diversity of Greater Pittsburgh, concerning issues as varied as urban blight, affordable housing, and entrepreneur development. To support these goals, PCRG VISTAs formulate policy recommendations, implement community engagement strategies, write grants, manage volunteers, and much more. Assignment Qualifications

To qualify for this position, the candidate must have served at least one full term as an AmeriCorps or Peace Corps member, and applicants with superior knowledge of the national service community are preferred. Although the VISTA Leader need not have an extensive background in economic and community development, some awareness of land use, banking, housing, or transportation policy is essential. Likewise, familiarity with communities and institutions in Greater Pittsburgh is desirable but not an absolute requirement.

As the VISTA Leader will convene regular meetings focused on professional development and networking, some record of group facilitation or public presentation is expected. The Leader must also be a strong writer, capable of composing professional-quality correspondence and reference documentation. Grant writing experience is helpful but not required. In addition, the leader should demonstrate basic proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and social media.

Assignment Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate recruitment efforts for PCRG and its partner organizations for potential members.
  • Provide technical support to VISTA member applicants and staff throughout the recruitment process.
  • Maintain regular and ongoing communications with VISTA members to track progress, recognize accomplishments, and provide support and feedback.
  • Provide support to current VISTA members, including mentoring, leading conference calls, and seeking additional resources to aid VISTA members’ professional development.
  • Plan and coordinate special service events that engage the PCRG cohort and other AmeriCorps Members serving in the Pittsburgh area.
  • Assist with organizing and conducting orientations for new VISTA members and corresponding staff.
  • Counsel VISTA members during exit and transition planning.
