The UMBC CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA Retriever Essentials project will work with campus and community partners to address food insecurity on the UMBC campus. The goal of this work will be to work with stakeholders to create a comprehensive and sustainable campus and community solution to food insecurity by giving students, faculty, and staff access to nutritious and healthy food, resources, and referrals for additional resources in effort to reduce food insecurity for our community.

The second year CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will implement the current working operation manual to continue streamlining all Retriever Essentials programming, while updating it to ensure needs are met in the most efficient way possible. They will oversee volunteer recruitment and coordination for daily operations of the food pantry, which include: donation collection, inventory, bag packing, and bag delivery. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will also be tasked with developing a fundraising plan in order to raise money to support Retriever Essentials’ proposal for a permanent pantry space on campus. They will also work to develop collaborative partnerships with departments and student groups, as well as the Retrievers Action Committee, on and off campus to provide programming and events around food justice, healthy eating on a budget, and much more. Additionally, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will create and implement a student-board to help institutionalize Retriever Essentials.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report to the Retriever Essentials Advisory Board and Shriver Center
  • Develop a vision and strategic plan for the organization in conjunction with the Advisory Board
  • Inform the Advisory Board of internal and external matters affecting the organization
  • Ensure that the organization’s mission is being properly executed
  • Develop and evaluate various programs-- Save a Swipe, current pantry operating strategy
  • Support and communicate with the Retriever Essentials Advisory Board
  • Lead and motivate Retriever Action Committee and student volunteers
  • Foster effective teamwork among Retriever Essentials Advisory Board, Retriever Action Committee, and student volunteers
  • Work autonomously to achieve benchmarks set by the Retriever Essentials Advisory Board
  • Develop and support fundraising activities to help secure permanent pantry space on campus
  • Serve as the face for the organization in public relations matters
  • Prepare official correspondence concerning the organization, such as press releases or annual updates
  • Represent the organization at community events and activities
  • Seek to expand the organizations community presence and public awareness of the organization’s services and efforts
  • Assist and create in sustainability efforts for Retriever Essentials in terms of funding, space, student volunteers, and maintaining and leading the Retriever Action Committee

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Interest and experience in field of food access/insecurity
  • Experience in event planning
  • Ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams; successfully work with a organization stakeholders; set and achieve strategic objectives; and manage a budget.
  • Strong social marketing and public relations experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong written, presentation and facilitation skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and lead coalitions.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-direction are significant assets for this position. Must be a relationship-builder.
