Literacy Tutor

St Margarte's Center
10217 South Inglewood Avenue
United States

Who we are: St. Margaret’s Center is a member of Catholic Charities that provides emergency assistance for over 11,000 low-income and homeless families in the LAX area. Our services include a food pantry, rent and utilities assistance, vision and mammogram screenings, help with immigration and food stamps processing, and free ESL and citizenship classes.

Why we need you: We are seeking enthusiastic, empathetic volunteers to expand our one-on-one tutoring program. As a tutor, you would have the opportunity to work with adult or child learners, focusing on basic English and literacy skills – reading, writing, and conversational English. Currently, most of out clients are adults who primary language is Spanish and have less than a high school education, but if we find enough interested tutors we will be expanding our small elementary school tutoring program as well. While familiarity with Spanish or experience teaching or tutoring ESL learners is a plus, all volunteers need in enthusiasm and time – we’ll provide training in adult learning and ESL teaching techniques through our partners at Literacy Network. Tutors must be over 18 and able to commit to just one hour a week! We are open 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-5:00 Mon-Fri; tutors are welcome any and all times they are available.

We are also now seeking classroom aides for our ESL class, which is offered Mon-Fri from 9 AM-12 PM! Aides would work with small groups of students from the class who are struggling with basic literacy skills.
