Exciting opportunity to volunteer with a grassroots women's empowerment project in rural Uganda in 2018!

About us

WIL Uganda - Women In Leadership is a registered NGO based in the rural village of Busembatia in eastern Uganda, Iganga district (around 3 hours from Kampala).

Our Mission

To empower women and girls with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in their own communites contributing to equitable development.

We are currently looking for passionate and motivated interns with experience in rural community development to lead this new and exciting project. To get an idea about the daily lives of our interns check out this video:

The volunteer will be engaged in both office and field based work as they work hand with the crafts programme volunteer and the Director to establish viable products for international sale, the demand, market and benefit to the local community. The intern will be expected to use their research to create a detailed business plan for the project and lead on initial implementation.

The sustainable business project lead role requires a lot of independent research and someone with an appropriate background in business or marketing.


Interns are accommodated in the village in safe, secure accommodation. Interns can choose to live in a host family. Applicants interested in staying in host family are required to fundraise extra £100 to cover host families expenses if staying for 3 months.

Program Duration

Dependant on volunteer availability but usually 3-6 months. Happy to discuss longer or shorter placements. Arrival date is 18th June and departure 23rd August.

Program Cost

up to 3 month placement = £800

6 month placement = £1000 (3 months in Uganda and 3 months in UK)

Funds cover interns accommodation, in country travel costs, lunches in placement, airport transfers (on dates and times stipulated. Transport outside our official dates will be paid for by interns) and contribute towards project costs.

Funds may be fundraised online via a crowd funding page or transferred directly to organisation by bank transfer or PayPal.

All funds must be received before arrival. Full training on crowd funding can be provided.

You will be required to cover

  • Flights
  • Visa $50
  • Food around $10 per week in placement
  • Travel insurance


  • University degree or enrolled on university course (Business/marketing/advertising)
  • At least one reference by former teacher or employer;
  • Interest in international development, women, economic empowerment and sustainability;
  • Access to digital camera and laptop to use throughout placement;
  • Previous experience in rural community is an advantage but not essential.


We will provide accommodation in the village, all airport transfers and in country transport for project.

As needed we will work one-on-one with your university to provide academic credit hours for your internship

We will provide you with extensive experience in project management, international development, and grant research and social media for development.

You will run your own projects and design your own workshops

You will get the chance to live abroad in one of the most beautiful places in the world!

Interview procedure
