Boston's Gibson House Museum Seeks Board Members

Do you love house museums? Do you care deeply about historic preservation? Are you interested in 19th- and early-20th-century Boston history? If so, please consider joining us at the Gibson House Museum, the historic house museum of Boston's Back Bay.

We are currently seeking a few experienced, enthusiastic people to serve on our Board of Directors. We are an active, dedicated, and collegial group of professionals who work together and with staff to preserve and promote the house, its history, and its collections. Board members meet monthly and also serve on committees.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

*A practicing lawyer and member of the Massachusetts Bar (required by our by-laws)

*A development professional to assist with grants and fundraising

*An architect with preservation experience

*A financial or accounting professional to eventually serve as treasurer

*A Back Bay or nearby resident with strong community ties to assist with networking and fundraising.

This is an excellent opportunity to become involved with an established nonprofit that serves a wide audience from students and scholars to neighbors and international visitors.

Board meetings are held at 5:45 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. Committee meetings are scheduled as needed around members’ schedules. Board members serve for three-year terms with no limits. We currently seek members to serve on our Building, Finance, Development, Literary, and Program Committees.

Board members are asked to make financial donations annually, according to their ability, in addition to giving their time.

About the Gibson House Museum

137 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02116

The Gibson House Museum is a private, nonprofit house museum in Boston's historic Back Bay neighborhood. It was home to three generations of Gibson family members and their household staff between 1859 and 1954. The Museum’s four floors of period rooms, including the original kitchen, are a time capsule of domestic life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors experience the house through guided tours that interpret class and culture through the stories and objects of the people who lived and worked there.

We are currently closed due to COVID-19, but hope to reopen on a part-time basis this fall if public-health conditions permit. In the meantime, you can still engage with us at https://www.thegibsonhouse.org/, through online events, and via our social media accounts listed above. The museum exists because of the vision of Charlie Gibson, Jr., a poet, horticulturist, and notable Boston character. A gay man, Charlie never married nor had children. Beginning in 1936, he decided to preserve his home as a monument to his family’s legacy and to the Boston of his youth. The Gibson House officially opened to the public as a museum in 1957 and has been open ever since.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Gibson House Museum is to serve as the primary resource for understanding and interpreting life in Boston’s Back Bay. The Museum accomplishes this by:

*Preserving the row house and its collections,

*Exhibiting and interpreting the house in its urban context to provide education and enjoyment to the broadest possible audience, and

*Promoting knowledge of Back Bay history and material culture.
