Goals

Our affiliate is expanding our Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) strategy. This includes supporting residents and community partners in building a sense of community, social cohesion, and collective action. This work is the foundation of further Neighborhood Revitalization work that complements our construction, repair, education, and safety work in the neighborhoods we serve. Working in tandem with all other AmeriCorps members at Habitat Philadelphia, this position will assist in planning and coordinating these efforts mostly in the Sharswood community where our affiliate is piloting this Neighborhood Revitalization strategy. This position will plan for and coordinate community-focused construction projects (e.g. partnering with local recreation centers to assist with repair, upgrades or revitalization projects; building “green spaces”), clean-ups, and events, along with residents, stakeholders, and community partners. This position will also support the work of the Brewerytown-Sharswood Neighborhood Advisory Council through the above activities; as well as facilitate, or connect residents to, services related to housing support and a safer community (examples include Town Watch training, estate planning, financial literacy, etc.).

This position will also work with the Family Services Coordinator to conduct targeted outreach for our housing programs and financial services. Similarly, this position will work with the Volunteer Coordination AmeriCorps member to recruit community volunteers for neighborhood projects and neighborhood home-building, while supporting resident-driven actions through a block-by-block approach. Additional responsibilities include facilitating evaluation and documentation of Neighborhood Revitalization benchmarks along with other team members. It is expected that this member will work from Habitat Philadelphia’s office approximately 30% of his or her time; work within the local anchor community’s Neighborhood Advisory Council office in Sharswood approximately 20% of the time; and be out in the community approximately 50% of the time organizing, working on community projects and strategies, and engaging with the community residents..

Responsibilities

  • Build relationships and partner with residents, local agencies, elected officials, and community stakeholders. These partnerships will inform the implementation of projects and activities that assist in achieving the neighborhood’s articulated goals and aspirations, mainly through the block-by-block approach.
  • Identify community improvement projects; plan and execute projects for successful completion (ex. Community clean-ups, community gardens, repairs to existing community assets, etc.).
  • Engage volunteers from the local community to support the local projects planned.
  • Conduct targeted community outreach for existing housing programs in target area.
  • Support the existing Neighborhood Advisory Council in providing information to local residents.
  • Regularly attend meetings relevant to building our Neighborhood Revitalization program. Examples include local town hall meetings, neighborhood association meetings, or individual meetings with community leaders.
  • Facilitate community data gathering to evaluate progress towards outcome indicators and determine the success of benchmarks, including monitoring and evaluating plans through our survey tool, Success Measures.
  • Build a community understanding of and support for Neighborhood Revitalization by collaborating with staff from other Habitat for Humanity departments.
