Time Commitment

A few hours per week

Duration

Long-Term (6 months-1 year)

LiteracyCNY needs volunteers to work with adult literacy students in various ways:

  • In one-to-one tutor-student pairs
  • In small group classes taught by credentialed instructors
  • In oral English conversation practice groups

Please note:  All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, comfortable using a computer for training purposes and email communications, fluent in English, and have completed high school or the equivalent.

Volunteers complete an online application, web-based tutor training modules, and an in-person wrap-up session before being matched with an adult literacy student. In addition, volunteer tutors agree to:

  • Read the LiteracyCNY Volunteer Handbook and abide by agency policies
  • Commit to a year of service with LiteracyCNY, and meet weekly with their assigned student
  • Accept an assignment with a LiteracyCNY student
  • Hold tutoring sessions in a public settings, such as libraries. Since most LiteracyCNY students live in the City of Syracuse, volunteers must be willing to tutor in the city.
  • Complete a monthly questionnaire regarding their tutoring activities
