The Global Acupuncture Project (GAP), formerly known as the PanAfrican Acupuncture Project, sends licensed acupuncturists to train local community healthcare workers (CHWs) in LMICs (low-to-middle-income countries) in a simple form of acupuncture. Since 2003, GAP has provided more than 45 trainings in Uganda and Mexico – a total of 350 CHWs trained. These GAP trainees then go on to provide free acupuncture treatments within communities where access to medical care is limited or nonexistent. Over the past 15 years, GAP trainees have provided more than 20,000 free treatments.
The patients who seek out acupuncture come in search of relief from pain and discomfort from illnesses and diseases such as TB (tuberculosis), HIV, diabetes, arthritis, vision impairment, dengue, and malaria. Services are open and free to all locals who find themselves in medical need.
GAP is currently searching for candidates to join its Board of Directors. The Board consults with organization's Executive Director in all areas including operations, communications, finances and development. We are especially interested in candidates who have experience in development/fundraising, grant writing, and social media.
The ideal candidate has at least one, and preferably more than one, of the following:
· Experience volunteering for a nonprofit organization
· Passion for the organization's mission and belief in global health equity
· Knowledge in development, grant writing, and conceiving of and planning fund raising events and/or launching fundraising mail campaigns.
Time commitment: Being on our board requires a minimum 1 year commitment.
Currently, our board meets monthly for 1½ hours, and we keep in regular contact via email and WhatsApp. Board members are required to help at 2 events and/or trainings per year, and to assist in planning and hosting an annual fundraiser each May. Board members are required to individually fundraise or contribute $800 per year, either from personal funds and fundraising, or by finding and securing major donors who fulfill that amount.
