Yoga, Service and Community Program Scholarship: Maintenance
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by Mount Madonna Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences
Full time (30+ hrs/wk)
Long-Term (6 months-1 year)
445 Summit Rd.
Mount Madonna Center offers a unique opportunity for those interested in living, studying and serving within a well-established residential yoga community and retreat Center. Participants will qualify for a scholarship of $1000 toward the program tuition (of $1345), which includes meals and lodging.
Mount Madonna Center is located on 355 acres of redwood forest and meadows overlooking Monterey Bay on the central coast of California. The community and its activities have been inspired by the yoga teachings and example of Baba Hari Dass. Please visit our website for more detailed information about our community.
The Yoga, Service and Community (YSC) Area Volunteer Program offers daily classes in the practices and philosophy of yoga, including physical positions (Asana), breath control practices (Pranayama) and aspects of Meditation Practice. Service (known in the yoga teachings as Karma Yoga) is one of the Program’s central components. This program is intended to help develop the qualities of mindfulness, discernment and a generous attitude towards serving others. There are weekly theme discussions and dialog groups, and experiential service learning. There are also opportunities to participate in a variety of other classes, community activities, and events. You can find more details about the program on the YSC page of our website.
Service Learning Placement:
The service component offers a unique opportunity to explore the essence of service. In providing for the needs of programs, events, and personal retreats, and a commitment to assisting guests, program participants will expand their understanding and experience of the meaning and importance of service, develop a greater sense of self-awareness, and learn communication and leadership skills within an intentional community setting.
The ideal applicant would look forward to being a member of a small team maintaining buildings--plumbing, electrical, minor carpentry, and other systems. Some maintenance or construction experience is necessary, and there is also the opportunity to learn diverse skills. The ideal participant has an ability to be a part of a team, as well as create teams, work independently, express good communication skills, generosity and affability, and is dedicated to helping others. It is a unique way to take a break from the traditional job market and experience life in a spiritual community while helping to maintain the community buildings and physical systems.
Program specifics for qualified applicants:
The volunteer receives a scholarship that includes tuition, single (private) room accommodation with shared bathroom, three vegetarian meals a day, and access to daily yoga classes. The upcoming program dates are June 12 -- August 26, 2018 with the option of applying for another 3-month session (August-December).
Applicants should be open to living in an intentional yoga community, engaging with others in a positive way, and keeping a clean and sober environment (no drugs or alcohol on the property). The community asks everyone to abide by the vegetarian guidelines while on the property. A valid driver's license is required.
