Description

Summer Volunteers Needed for Gleaning at the Farmers’ Market (requires a group of 8)!

Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin, Inc. (CAC) strives to make fresh, local food available to everyone. Gleaning at the Farmers’ Market helps us toward this goal by making locally farmed and prepared goods available to a wider range of people in Madison.

What is gleaning?

Gleaning refers to the harvesting of surplus produce and other goods from farms, farmers’ markets, and vendors. CAC’s Farmers’ Market gleaning program connects volunteers with Farmers’ Market vendors to collect healthy and edible, but not “sell-able,” food. These foods are then distributed to people in need through local food pantries and meal sites. This increases access to nutritious food and reduces unnecessary food waste.

How does it work?

You and your group choose an open date or dates on which you would like to glean. On your selected Saturday(s) at 11:30 am; volunteers and a CAC staff member meet at the Dane County Farmers’ Market (see exact location below), and go through a brief training. At noon, volunteers begin gleaning by walking a cart to vendor stalls and asking vendors if they would like to donate any surplus goods to local pantries. Volunteers then bring those gleaned goods back to be loaded onto the CAC truck. At the end of the market day, products are brought back to CAC by a staff member- to be weighed and stored for distribution to local meal sites and food pantries.

Requirements:

Please pick your date and make sure to have/recruit at least 8 volunteers.

The effort requires a group of 8 volunteers and a one-time commitment of about 1.5 hours, though we encourage volunteer groups to sign up as often as they would like! If you would like to participate but do not have a group of 8, please contact Lindsey, CAC's Gleaners Coordinator, at lindseyk@cacscw.org.

This position requires standing, walking, lifting (20-40 lbs), and socializing with farmers and vendors.

When?

Current gleaning efforts take place at the Dane County Farmers’ Market every Saturday (11:30 am- 1 pm) during the market season, with the exception of July 14th (Art Fair on the Square).

Where?

Dane County Farmers’ Market on the square, at the East Washington Ave driveway to the capital (the CAC truck is hard to miss). On Saturday, September 1st, the meeting place will be in front of Grace Episcopal Church near W Washington Ave, due to the Taste of Madison event.

Age restrictions?

Minimum: 18 years old (or 15-17 years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian)
