Masa is seeking dedicated volunteers to provide remote summer academic support to elementary school students in the South Bronx! Masa partners with Mexican and Latino children, youth and families to develop strong learners and leaders who fully contribute the broader community. Our community-led, integrated model engages the entire family, grounded in a deep commitment to strengthening literacy, leadership and power for Mexican, Central-American and Indigenous people. We foster a culturally responsive learning community in which families engage with direct service and advocacy programs to dismantle barriers to success.

About the Summer Math Intensive Program:

Masa invites you to join our math intensive summer program, which supports children in building their academic skills so they are better prepared for the academic year.

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to support this program. Under the guidance of an expert instructor, you will implement targeted lesson plans in small groups of students in grades 3-5. This is a great opportunity to provide academic support to children of immigrants in an already historically underserved area in New York City. Your support of this program helps young people improve their math skills so they can start the next academic year as confident learners and readers!

When:

Wednesdays – Fridays from July 27th through August 20th

  • Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 – 3:00 pm
  • Fridays from 2:30 – 3:30 pm

What:

Work with small groups of students to provide intensive math instruction using a lesson plan created by our expert instructor (who is on Zoom to provide support). Model enthusiasm for math!

Requirements are as follows:

Availability

  • Able to volunteer at least every Wednesday and Thursday from 1:30 – 3:00 pm for the entire 4-week program
  • Able and willing to use Zoom with your camera enabled
  • Able to attend a training on the week of July 20th, 2020

Experience/Disposition

  • Willing to review lesson plans in advance and ask questions as needed
  • Knowledge of elementary school math, preferably in regards to Common Core Standards for New York State
  • Comfortable implementing/leading lessons independently
  • Interested in working with children in grades 3-5; able to model enthusiasm
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting is a plus, but not required
  • Maintain and model high academic and personal expectations for all students
  • Provide feedback on student progress and/or concerns to Masa staff
  • Be flexible, creative, organized and able to respond to change as needed
  • Maintain a strengths-based and social justice framework when working with students
  • Help manage behavior and lead students through daily instruction

An interview and complete volunteer application is required for this role.
