Long-Term (6 months-1 year)

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 earthquake hit Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu, the worst of its kind in more than 80 years. More than 9,000 people were killed, a further 23,000 were injured and the destruction to infrastructure and homes was massive. On May 12, 2015, a second 7.3 earthquake struck the country, causing further devastation and loss of lives. 72 hours after the first earthquake, All Hands Volunteers arrived and got to work.

After almost 3 years in Nepal, All Hands Volunteers has impacted over 20,000 people throughout our response and recovery efforts. A total of 1,769 volunteers from 72 countries have donated 192,980 volunteer hours toward putting families back in homes and kids back in schools in Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, and Nuwakot. In addition to this core focus, we have been involved in numerous community projects such as masonry training, school reading projects, water catchment systems, and more. After more than three years, the Nepali people are still in dire need. As a result, All Hands Volunteers has focused our efforts on one goal- getting the children of Nepal back to school.

Our program is closed down for monsoon season during the months of May-October but we will reopen our program from November 2019-May 2020. Our volunteers work on our school rebuild sites completing all types of construction work including groundwork, steel work, carpentry, masonry, and finishing. Our volunteers live and work in the communities they are supporting to recover.

We accept spontaneous volunteers from any background, providing on-the-job training free of charge.

FAQ's:

Does it cost money?

Volunteering with All Hands and Hearts is completely free of charge, and we provide accommodation and meals. Keep in mind that you will be responsible for the cost of your travel both to and from the program, meals on your day(s) off, and any costs associated with taking a 3 day break each month away from program.

What are the accommodations like?

Accommodations vary by program and the communities we are working within. They are often community centre spaces, churches, or schools, and it’s communal living at its finest! Accommodation is always mixed gender housing, and there are always opportunities for functioning bathrooms and showers. Due to the communal living environment and limited residential space, we advise packing light. As soon as you apply and are confirmed, you will be emailed live information packets full of the most updated information of what to pack, what to expect, and how to get to the base you’ll be volunteering at.

What can I expect on a typical workday?

Each day depends on the scope of work that the home or school you are placed on requires. Typical tasks include mucking and gutting, mold sanitation, insulation and drywall insulation, carpentry, and painting. Don’t worry if you have never done this before - we will teach you everything you need to know when you get here! Each work day is from about 8 AM-4 PM, however these hours change depending on the needs of the program you volunteer for. After you return home from the worksite, you will have a chance to unwind, relax, and reflect on your day as a part of our nightly team meetings.
