Description

Maine Campus Compact (MCC) is a statewide coalition of colleges and universities whose purpose is to further the public purposes and civic mission of higher education. MCC’s team of 10 VISTAs will develop programming that mobilizes college students to increase college aspirations in Maine’s K-12 youth.


As part of the University of Southern Maine’s Service-Learning and Volunteering team, the VISTA serving as STEM Partnerships Coordinator will support the development and growth of STEM programming and episodic service that supports STEM initiatives. This person will cultivate partnerships between USM and local K-12 schools, while building in specific steps to strengthen the sustainability of these partnerships and programs on the USM campus.


University of Southern Maine’s VISTA STEM Partnerships Coordinator will:

• Assist in implementing campus visits or events for K-12 youth that include STEM-focused activities, including the STEM Expo and Day of Code

• Design and implement STEM Sisters mentoring program

• Support the development and implementation of courses integrating 4-H STEM Ambassadors

• Create faculty and K-12 teacher resources that help facilitate course implementation, initial service-learner meetings, and service-learner support

• Develop and implement recruitment, management, and marketing systems for STEM Ambassadors and STEM Sisters Programs

• Attend student fairs, participate in class presentations, visit the Board of Student Organizations, Student Senate and other relevant groups to present and build sustainable relationships that will motivate long-term service engagement


Essential functions and qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher required
  • Community service experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Motivated, independent worker
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license and car


Desired functions and qualifications:

  • Prior work with K-12 students
  • Experience in college aspirations/access
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Event planning and program management
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Education background in a STEM field


Benefits and terms:

MCC VISTAs receive a stipend of roughly $15,269 over the course of the year. USM provides a USM ID card, library privileges, parking permit, partial meal plan, and fitness center membership, and there is a potential option for residence hall housing on the USM Gorham campus, which is 9 miles west of the Portland campus (where the office is located). Upon successful completion, choose either an education award of $6,095 to use toward educational loans or future educational expenses or a stipend of $1,800. If choosing the education award, members can put any qualifying loans in forbearance during their term and any accrued interest will be paid off by AmeriCorps at the end of the term. Members receive a health benefit plan, are covered under workers’ compensation, and have numerous professional development opportunities. There will be a mandatory Virtual Member Orientation which will be held on November 27th, 2018 for Vistas with a service start date of December 3rd, 2018.
