Organization’s purpose, size, and audience served.

Through an integrated system of emergency, transitional, permanent affordable housing, and permanent supportive housing, LA Family Housing (LAFH) strives to provide a safe, caring, and service-rich environment that helps homeless families and individuals rebuild their lives. Since our inception in 1983, our success has been based on an individualized approach to meet each program participant’s unique needs. This model connects participants to permanent housing and helps them achieve long-term housing stability through a full continuum of services. Our affordable apartments and supportive services serve the most vulnerable people in our community, including veterans, chronically homeless adults, youth transitioning out of foster care, survivors of domestic violence or trauma, and children. Last year LAFH served 7,294 people experiencing homelessness and moved 1,422 people into permanent housing.

Project description.

Each person's unique life experience defines what type of support they need. With these needs in mind, LAFH connects participants to the right type of housing for them and surrounds them with the services that are proven to foster long-term housing stability. We provide emergency (Crisis Housing) for families in immediate distress and transitional (Bridge Housing) where participants can prepare to move into a permanent home. We also build permanently affordable apartment homes and Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) - a model that combines affordable housing, healthcare, and other supportive services - to help individuals and families lead more stable lives.

Though every story is different, a common challenge that many of our participants share is food insecurity. With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, what should be a time for family and reflection can easily become a time of worry and distress. These negative feelings may arise in the uncertainty of how to create a festive meal for themselves and/or their family. LAFH established the Thanksgiving Bag program to meet this need.

We invite you, your group of friends, corporation, religious congregation, or all of the above to host a drive for Thanksgiving Bags and share the gift of dignity and encouragement with individuals and families experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. In each Thanksgiving Bag please include;

$20.00 gift card to Food4Less or Ralphs for a turkey

1 can of cranberries

2 cans of vegetables (e.g. carrots, green beans, etc.)

1 box chicken broth

1 can yams

1 box of Jell-O or pudding mix

1 box of stuffing

1 box of mashed potato buds

1 box of corn muffin mix

Optional: Thanksgiving greeting card or favorite family recipe

We estimate one bag costing between $50- $75.

Please have bags completed and delivered to LA Family Housing by Thursday, November 15th.
