Sharing God's Blessings by Helping Others in Need is the mission of LCS. We do this by providing emergency food, homelessness prevention (in the form of grants or no interest loans for rent, mortgage, utilities or security deposit), clothing minor home repairs, and help to quit smoking.

The desire to make a difference by helping people obtain basic necessities is critical along with flexibility and open-mindedness in dealing with situations. There are also many opportunities for a bilingual volunteer to practice Spanish speaking skills.

The person in this position will have the opportunity to meet with people from very diverse backgrounds who all have one thing in common:

The need for basic necessities such as food and housing. Through this work, the volunteer will listen to the stories and respond to the needs of families seeking housing assistance. The position involves completing telephone and face-to-face interviews, assisting low-income households to develop a monthly budget, completing necessary paperwork, and participating in staff meetings to review applications for financial assistance.

In addition, in the process of helping these families, the volunteer will coordinate with landlords, local agencies, and others to connect clients with appropriate community resources and try to ensure that the families do not lose their housing.

To help meet the needs of hungry families and individuals (about half of the people we serve are children), the volunteer will have hands-on experience helping to coordinate emergency food pantries by working with volunteers, making sure that supplies are available, serving as a backup for other volunteers who give the food to families, unloading and stocking food (requires lifting and carrying heavy boxes), and other related duties.

A commitment to providing respectful and caring service; ability to work with low-income families, older volunteers, staff, and characteristics other professionals; willingness to learn and accept new challenges; excellent listening skills; good written and oral and skills needed for this and flexibility. Creativity is helpful, but not necessary, because each family situation is unique and there may be a variety of ways to pull different resources together to meet and family's needs.
