Job Title: NYIC AmeriCorps VISTA


Organizational Background

Founded in 2006, the Libertas Center for Human Rights, located at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, provides survivors of physical/psychological torture and human rights violations residing in the New York City area with integrated medical, mental health, social and legal services to help them regain function and restore humanity in their lives. We follow a strength’s based and trauma-informed case management approach to address the multifaceted and highly interwoven needs of survivors. Our vision is that all survivors lead healthy, confident, and hopeful lives. 


The Role

This is a full-time position and affords the opportunity to make a significant contribution to an organization with substantial social impact while building unique experience for professional advancement. Reporting to the Program Director, and working closely with the Libertas team, the NYIC Vista will play a critical role in supporting social service, communications, fund development, and outreach activities that advance the Libertas Center's torture survivor rehabilitation and anti-poverty work. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, be flexible to shift priorities and multi-task, and have the ability to anticipate, and solve challenges. A strong interest in human rights and global health is preferred.


Job Description (Duties may be added or adjusted):

·        Research private, government, and institutional grant opportunities, determine Libertas' eligibility and alignment to grant-making priorities, and gather information to help craft compelling Letters of Inquiry (LOI) that lead to invitations to submit full proposals.

·        Develop template LOIs/proposals, based on a set of themes/topics and budget parameters that Libertas will be able to use and/or adapt for future RFPs and grant opportunities.

·        Help prepare a calendar of social media postings and draft daily and weekly social media posts, vetting through the Libertas Program Director and Program Assistant.

·        Support development of outreach and communications materials for an individual giving program, including brochures and success story profiles.

·        Research and update social and health service resources city wide, to ensure accurate referrals to food, clothing, housing/shelter, language, childcare, pharmacy, among others.

·        Develop a system to track and update existing social service resources and develop key contacts with agencies.


QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated cultural competency with immigrant communities and/or other vulnerable populations.


Energetic, able to address challenges of a wide variety with creativity, initiative, and resourcefulness.


Knowledge and experience with social media and website/communications/design platforms like Mailchimp, Hootsuite (or similar), Squarespace, WordPress, etc.


Comfort working with data and databases preferred.


Maturity, ability to navigate challenging situations, and meet responsibilities with professionalism.


Team player, responsive to guidance and feedback while maintaining a positive work environment.


Ability to thrive in a fast-paced collaborative team where effective communication is essential.


Language skills (Spanish, Bangla, Russian, French, Chinese, etc) preferred.


Compensation

During their year of service, the NYIC VISTA will be supported with the following benefits:

·        living allowance stipend ($20,641)

·        choice of healthcare allowance ($7,150) or a health plan

·        choice of a year-end education award ($5,815) or cash stipend ($1,803)

·        eligibility for benefits such as:

o   relocation allowance (up to $1,000)

o   settling-in allowance (up to $550)

o   child care support (up to $400 per month per child)


NYIC VISTAs, www.nyic.org/vista, are AmeriCorps VISTAs who - through the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) - engage in a year of full-time paraprofessional service in an organization, where they work on community outreach/education, communications, fundraising, program development and/or volunteer management projects for the purpose of building the organization's capacity to run immigrant-focused anti-poverty programs and services.
