Our Mission

Goal 13 of the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is dedicated to strengthening the resilience and global adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards.

Board Member Responsibilities

The Chapter, as a group and as individuals, is not only expected to provide organizational governance, but to also take an active role with long-range strategic development initiatives. Chapter Officers must exercise a strong sense of professionalism, high moral standards and fiscal stewardship whilst maintaining the best interest of the UNA-USA.

o  Understand and become acquainted with the UN Charter, UN governance structure and subcommittees, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and UNA-USA’s mission.

o  Willingness to engage in a succession plan inclusive of developing and testing standard operating procedures ensuring the continued success of the Chapter during periods of transition and growth.

o  Make a moderately significant initial commitment of time for meetings, orientation and for periodic consultation with UNA associate members. Per week contribution after the chapter startup phase is approximately 5 hours per week.

o  Selected candidates must register to become a UNA-USA member within ten business days after being extended an offer to contribute in the volunteer V.P. CSD capacity.

o  Attempt to recruit two UNA-USA members annually.

o  Commit to a two-year term, commencing as of the date of appointment.

Programmatic Responsibilities

o  Assume responsibility of staying abreast and raising awareness about climate-change relevant press releases, briefings and conferences of note, advanced or sponsored, most importantly by, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

o  Lead the development of engaging communal events that raise awareness of the global challenges, specific to UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 13 – Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change and Its Impacts, the stabilizing efforts of the UN, UN-legal instruments and the policies therein e.g. United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, and celebrate Community-Based Organizations (CBO), local not-for-profit organizations and for-profit organizations that have mobilized human footprint reduction and climate-change adaptive efforts on a micro-level. In addition, this position will be responsible for the development of “green” business solution networking events aimed at connecting small business owners to “green” business solution providers.

o  Design domestic micro UN-simulated youth-engagement programs that promote awareness about the environmental externalities of the human footprint, human footprint impact reduction schemes and early warning signs of the adverse effects of climate-change. Youth-engagement programs may include but are not limited to “A GreenHouse School Top” initiative and credit-bearing solar panel installation and maintenance trade programs for graduating high school seniors and college-aged students. Program design efforts should encourage collaboration with CBO’s, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), secondary and post-secondary institutions, or through existing UN partnerships.
