Teaching English and promoting cultural exchange in Michoacan

  • Volunteer Opportunity posted by CADIP

Long-Term (6 months-1 year)

Education and intercultural experiences unlock opportunities, open our minds to understanding other cultures and other people's way of life, inspire us and make us better human beings. Unfortunately 95% of Mexican youngsters who finish high school do not speak English. Despite the fact that there are many official schools that teach English in Mexico, the knowledge acquired in these programs is poor, and the private institutions are very expensive for the average family.

An International Cultural Center was opened in Morelia City in 2014 with the objective to share cultures and languages in a different way, applying the philosophy of Learning by Doing, and to promote the intercultural exchange between Mexico and the World. The activities promoted at the Center include language learning and intercultural exchange between Mexican youngsters and international volunteers. By volunteering in Mexico and opening this possibility to disadvantaged youths, you are giving them the chance to improve their level of education, to get to know you and your culture, to improve their international understanding and global awareness and to access better options in life. The gift of your time and knowledge could give a youngster a much greater gift – the means to a brighter future.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will facilitate workshops to practice English and other languages with local youth through dynamic, fun and participatory activities. Knowledge or experience in teaching languages through interactive activities and using creative materials is very welcome.

Volunteers will also share their culture with the Mexican people by organizing cultural workshops and intercultural learning seminars with the support of the trainers of the center. Each volunteer can propose and organize different activities to present their culture (food, lifestyle, movies, drinks, etc.).

The colonial city of Morelia is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and from its breathtaking architecture, it's easy to see why.
