A few hours per month
Short-Term (few weeks/months)
Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center
1063 Hartman Station Road
We have several opportunities for volunteering!
Positions include, but are not limited to:
Lesson Volunteers work in a team to assist with riding lessons. One volunteer serves as a horse leader and guides the horse throughout the lesson. Two additional volunteers serve as side walkers to assure the safety of the student rider. Every week of lessons, nearly 180 volunteer positions must be filled in order for us to teach safe riding lessons.
Barn Assistant Volunteers provide the care our herd needs every day of the year. Volunteers perform barn chores like feeding horses, mucking stalls, sweeping, cleaning tack, stripping stalls, grooming, and tacking horses.
Schooling Riders are competent equestrians chosen by Greystone Manor TRC instructors to school and exercise our horses and ponies. In order to become a schooling rider, volunteers must serve in our lesson program for at least one full session (six weeks) and pass a riding test including walk, trot, and canter.
Professional Volunteers donate their professional services in areas such as photography, grant writing, budget and finance, and gardening.
Facility Assistants help with cleaning, maintenance, and grounds keeping duties like mending fences and mowing.
Office Assistants help with mailings, filing, and other office duties.
The minimum age for all volunteers is 14 years of age.
Experience with horses and/or with people that have special needs is helpful, but not required. We provide basic training on lesson volunteering during orientation and offer additional learning opportunities throughout the year for our volunteers to gain skills and knowledge in these areas.
If you have other ideas about how you would like to help out, please let us know!
Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center would not be able operate without our volunteers. We provide opportunities for children and adults with special needs to participate in equine-assisted activities. Horseback riding helps improve balance, coordination, endurance, strength, social relationships, and self-esteem. Our volunteers make that experience possible.
Thank you for your time, commitment, and desire to serve others!

How To Apply
All new volunteers must attend a New Volunteer Orientation.
The next sessions for 2018 are as follows:
August 18th, October 6th – from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Please RSVP your attendance via email: email@example.com or leave a message at: 717-203-7388. Thank you!
Please complete the following forms and clearances and bring them with you to orientation:
Volunteer Registration Forms
All volunteers onsite must complete a registration form and sign a waiver of liability.
Volunteer clearances are not required to be complete in order to attend orientation, however it is recommended to start them as soon as possible because sometimes it takes time for them to be processed. Completed clearances need to be on file prior to scheduling your first volunteer shift. (Special event and one day event volunteers do not have to complete clearances unless working directly with riders.)
All volunteers 18 years of age and older must submit a clean Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Record Check and a clean Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance effective January 1, 2014. Clearances have no fee if requested for the purpose of volunteering and are considered valid for three years from their stated request/verification date.
The Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Record Check can be completed online through this link. Select "New Record Check" for volunteers and follow the instructions on the following pages.
The Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance can be completed online through this link. Go to Child Welfare Portal, then select Create Individual Account and follow the instructions on the following pages.
Completed online, unless the application is ‘Under Review’ both clearances can be immediately printed. ‘Under Review’ clearances can take approximately 14 days to process after receipt of request. Plan for a two to four week processing timeline.
