Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our rich, innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing, research or art coach in the classroom. You'll support, engage, and encourage students as they work on their projects.
These workshops need your support at a school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. To sign up, please contact email@example.com with the program code and time(s) you'd like. We'll supply the school address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Volunteer Role: Writing Coach
About the workshop: Sixth-graders in four Black History classes read Nikki Grimes’ book of poems, One Last Word, which offers a fresh look at the poets of the Harlem Renaissance. Using the author’s “Golden Shovel” method of writing, each student selected a poem, chose a stanza from it, and wrote their own poem that relates to the theme of his or her identity. Writing coaches will help them edit their work to reach a final draft in performance form.
