Journey Out is looking for board members who believe in our mission and are willing to be active in their governance roles. When it comes to the human rights & public health epidemic of human sex trafficking, we believe that this work has never been more important than it is today.

ABOUT JOURNEY OUT: We are a 501c3 non-profit, non-governmental organization, and our mission is “to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking leave a life of abuse and violence, overcome their fears, and empower them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals”. At the core of our mission is our commitment of empowerment, particularly empowerment of individuals who represent groups of people who are often forgotten, or are otherwise rendered invisible by society.

Our overarching goals are two-fold: first, deliver the critical services and support needed to break free from the abuse and violence of sex trafficking and rebuild a life; and second, to ensure that no one enters “the life”.

In 2015 we went through a period of rebranding, which included a name change from the Mary Magdalene Project. We are still growing and the restructuring of the Board of Directors is part of that process.

Who We Serve: Our clients are women and girls who are victims of human sex trafficking. They are largely from underrepresented minority groups and are defined as “extremely low” and “very low” income. Many are also currently homeless, and have benefited from our housing referral/placement services. We provide these clients with case management and wrap around services, as they have often experience multiple layers of trauma and abuse; and as a result may also suffer from mental illness and drug addiction.

What We Are Looking For: We are looking for individuals whose experience and involvement in the community would be an asset to our organization; particularly those who feel passionate about: women and girls’ empowerment, abolishing human trafficking, LGBTQ health disparities, and mitigating violence against women.

Specific Experience:

Any of the following specific experience would be of great benefit to the Board of Directors:

  • fund development
  • event management/ planning
  • strategic planning
  • communications
  • marketing
  • budgeting
  • finance
  • legal knowledge – immigration, child & family services, records expungement, etc.
  • law enforcement

Journey Out is entering a challenging and exciting time, as demand for our services continues to rise. In just the past few months, we have received the most emergency calls, since our inception in 1980. Indeed, this points to the fact that sex trafficking in Los Angeles County, is an undeniable epidemic. Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego were listed in 2009 as three of the FBI’s top 13 child sex-trafficking areas in the nation.”

We have a tradition of high quality service provision, collaborative partnerships, and community engagement.
