Use your diplomacy and love for nature to grow shade trees along Embassy Row. Restore Mass Ave (restoremassave.org) seeks volunteers who know a bit about trees and want to use their outreach skills to share knowledge of tree care with embassies and others, so the nation's last "Grand Avenue" landscape will be extended and preserved.

As a Tree Ambassador you’ll be RMA's liaison with a few properties, such as the embassy of a country you have visited, studied, or come from.

You’ll build relationships with diplomats and others on Embassy Row by demonstrating how to protect and care for trees. With our literature and guidebook and supported by our team's 13+ years of experience, you can enroll more properties to be part of RMA's "Green Community."

Recent turnover of both US owners and embassy personnel means that RMA needs to re-introduce why this amazing landscape is important and how to sustain it. Also, the DC Department of Transportation plans an 18-month road reconstruction project along nearly one mile - where we have been saving trees. Our Tree Ambassador program is RMA's response to these challenges.

Tasks

  • Visit "your" agreed embassies and/or neighbors on Mass Ave to introduce them to RMA and hear their landscape needs, such as a dying tree or upcoming property work
  • Develop shared stewardship by showing them best practices from RMA’s Historic Landscape Guide
  • Help as needed "your" property's liaison with city officials and the State Department on urban forestry issues
  • Follow up regularly to continue productive, enjoyable relationships on behalf of RMA

Requirements

  • Prefer background in international relations and/or strong interpersonal skill set
  • Prefer background in urban forestry or urban planning
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented as a neighbor and/or professional
  • Detail-oriented and timely in communications
  • Comfortable and diplomatic in a variety of cultural settings

COVID-19 Considerations

RMA's priority is the health and safety of its volunteers and staff. The activities advertised with this position can be performed remotely, and we will alter any tasks to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Work schedules can be flexible to accommodate personal and professional needs during this extraordinary time. The interview process will be conducted virtually.
