Learn how to make important policy changes through community organizing. Make a difference in the struggle against poverty! The George Wiley Center brings people together to fight for economic and social justice by focusing on changing polices that impact the poor.

-Contribute to efforts aiming to assure everyone is treated with dignity and has adequate income, food and housing. We work with low-income and unemployed Rhode Islanders struggling with economic injustice.

-Organize community members to make direct impacts on various issues, such as stopping utility shutoffs, increasing food security by improving access to SNAP and school breakfasts, strengthening support for the unemployed, and increasing jobs for youth. Learn how to organize youth, seniors, and immigrant families through a unique collective casework model, grassroots lobbying and direct action. Volunteers gain experience with various organizing approaches that are useful for a lifetime.

Skills obtained are relevant to social work, sociology, political science, law, as well as nonprofit and public administration. We also welcome people who are interested in accounting, economics, visual design, theater, oral history, film-making, and communications including social media. Whatever your skills are you can use them to assist with our efforts toward justice. We can accommodate for varying time lengths that would suit your volunteer interests..

Qualifications: Commitment to economic and social justice

- No specific knowledge or skill set required, we welcome all types of knowledge and skills sets

-Interest in learning community organizing skills and building social movements

-Willingness to work with diverse populations in multilingual settings

Specific Tasks For All Areas of Interest Could Include:

-Help with planning and outreach for community meetings and mobilizing for participation in grassroots lobbying and direct actions

-Conducting interviews and making videos to promote public awareness Expanding our social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube postings

-Community outreach at food pantries, soup kitchens, churches, community health centers and social service agencies

- Contributing your ideas and skills to improve projects and efforts
