After School Activity Coordinator

1700 Hour Position

Approximately 40 hours/week

Service Location: Tucson, AZ

Service Dates: September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019






Higher Ground, a Resource Center is a strategic plan to build a replicable model of a resource community center that will be a one stop place for people who need services and people who give services. Our mission is Reaching individuals, Transforming families, and Elevating the community one life at a time by showing love and building character. We want to see a resource center that promotes a different definition of success = generational community contribution. Our Purpose is to provide services that will invest in the mental, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical health of an individual to build a better tomorrow.


Higher Ground is seeking a full-time After School Activity Coordinator who will organize activities throughout the school year and summer program. The AmeriCorps State member will work with recreational coaches, volunteers, and students to improve the quality, production, and atmosphere of the program and meet program goals. The State member will also monitor students and evaluate coaches’ performance during recreational activities with the goal to create a stronger community amongst the recreation coaches of Higher Ground.





A.  Program Coordination: The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for program coordination by training staff in the Higher Ground Experience, in Youth Program Quality Assessment (YPQA) and program procedures. They will also develop an atmosphere that will create an enjoyable work environment and encourage coaches to be productive.


B.  Educational Training: The AmeriCorps member will ensure all recreational activities are properly stocked with all necessary supplies and materials. They will provide overall recreational activity support and management to volunteers in recreational activities, including the implementation of participant guidelines and student policies.


C.  Student and Project Support: The AmeriCorps member will organize Friday Fun Days recreational activities assuring they include guest speakers and field trips. In addition, they are to make connections with all the students of Higher Ground on regular and consistent basis. They will also equip coaches with the necessary support to ensure that they are exceeding goals and fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.


D.  Summer Program Coordination: The AmeriCorps member will prepare for summer programming by working with Higher Ground’s Program Manager on the End of Year Program. They will also provide overall support and management to summer program facilitators and coaches.

A.  Education, Skills and Abilities


Minimum qualifications:

o  Age 17 or older

o  Background in Psychology, Education, or Recreation/Physical Education preferred

o  Well organized and detail orientated

o  Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps

o  Strong written and verbal communication skills

o  Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, and positive manner

o  Effective problem-solving skills

o  Ability to understand the "big picture" while completing detail oriented tasks

o  Friendly and effective interpersonal skills

o  Healthy sense of humor

o  Consistent and reliable access to reliable transportation

o  Fluency in Spanish is beneficial, not required



AmeriCorps State Member Benefits (1700 Hour)

●    $12,630 living allowance during term of service

●    Upon completion of service, full-time (1700 hour) AmeriCorps members receive a $5,920 education award that can be applied to educational costs or student loans

●    Members participate in 10 (2-hour) trainings that qualify them for a Certificate in Civic Leadership and 4 college credits from Prescott College

●    Team support and coaching
