OVERVIEW:

Uniterra is a leading Canadian international volunteer cooperation and development program, jointly implemented by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

Uniterra contributes to improving the socio-economic conditions of poor and marginalized communities in 14 countries and with over 200 partners in Africa, Asia and the Americas through the exchange of expertise and knowledge of Canadian and international volunteers. Uniterra believes that economic growth, when inclusive, is the most powerful driver of poverty reduction. The purpose of the Uniterra program is to improve the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable populations by stimulating growth and facilitating access to the benefits of growing and diversified markets. To make this happen, we are working with our local partners to enhance the income of poor and marginalized women and youth through better access to employment and income generation opportunities. Uniterra country program staff work with our local partners to design Uniterra assignments in the context of the country strategy, supporting the inclusion of women and youth in key economic subsectors.

PARNTER DESCRIPTION:

Konjyosom Rural Municipality is located in the southern part of Lalitpur district. It is located in Province number 3 and consists of five wards: Konjyosom, Bhardeu, Chaughare, Dalchoki and Nallu. It covers an area of 44. 16 square km and has a population of 9,709. The major ethnic group of this rural municipality are Tamang. Other groups include: Brahmins, Kshetries, and Dalits. Konjyosom Rural Municipality is responsible for the overall development and formulation of municipal plans and policies.

Konjyosom Rural Municipality, has a newly elected government. Konjyosom is planning to develop a master plan for the overall development of the municipality. The majority of the population is engaged in agriculture. There is also potential for domestic and international tourism. Therefore, the municipality has envisaged modernizing agriculture to engage more people in commercial farming as well as developing a strategy for tourism promotion.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review existing and past programs and conduct focus group discussions with key staff, board members and beneficiaries;
  • Provide guidance and support to the Municipality in the development of a local economic development plan including a strategic rural plan;
  • Provide coaching and training to the Municipality elected officials as well as staff in understanding and implementing the plan;
  • Consolidate the results, document best practices and participate in the implementation of exit strategies;
  • Ensure the participation and representation of women and youth in all activities of the mandate; and
  • Produce reports required by Konjyosom Rural Municipality and the Uniterra program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in rural planning, business, community development, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in rural planning or community development or in a municipality
  • Ready to work in a rural setting with limited resources
  • Patience and tolerance to ambiguity
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Ability to work in different cultures
  • Openness to learning

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.
  • Departure date is contingent upon the timely completion of all administrative requirements (e.g. visa processes, medical clearance, police checks, travel documentation).
  • With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
