Job Summary:

The Foundation’s Office of Estates and Gift Planning encourages charitable donations from alumni and friends that fulfill their greatest philanthropic aspirations in support of the areas of New Mexico State University they care about deeply.

Gift planning officers are responsible for implementing fundraising activities focusing primarily on acquiring deferred and split-interest gifts, or those of a more complex nature. Acting in accordance with the core values of the NMSU Foundation, gift planning officers execute their fundraising responsibilities to fulfill the financial needs and strategic initiatives of the Foundation and New Mexico State University.

Established in 1959, the New Mexico State University Foundation’s mission is to build a brighter future for NMSU, one relationship at a time. As an independent nonprofit organization, the Foundation is the primary fundraising and alumni relations institution for NMSU. We are charged with raising and managing gifts of all types and coordinating the alumni association. We invest endowed gifts and disburse funding each year for the purposes designated by donors. The Foundation coordinates the efforts of the NMSU Alumni Association, which galvanizes the enthusiasm and loyalty of the NMSU alumni network of over 147,000 graduates to support the mission of NMSU while becoming better connected with each other.

NMSU is New Mexico’s flagship land-grant and space-grant institution. Founded in 1888, NMSU is the oldest institution of higher education in the state and is a Hispanic-serving institution and a comprehensive research university dedicated to teaching, research, service, and outreach. Essential Functions, Fundraising:

  • Create and manage a personal prospect pipeline of alumni and friends through in-person visits, virtual visits, group presentations, phone contacts, and emails.
  • Travel regionally and nationally to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and donors, focusing on major gift ($25,000+) and principal gift ($500,000+) opportunities, particularly those of a deferred or more complex nature.
  • Initiate a strategy specific to each prospect or donor, connecting them to the University and setting up a solicitation that is tailored to their situation and maximizes the impact for the University and its beneficiaries.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, employing a comprehensive regimen of knowledge of planned giving vehicles to secure planned gifts for the Foundation.
  • Establish professional relationships with development officers, deans, faculty, and unit directors across campus leading to regional, national, and virtual travel to cultivate, solicit, close, and steward major and principal gifts.
  • Document visits and solicitations in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Update and inform supervisors and other staff of goal status, new plans, and project status, and ensures that a cooperative team effort is made to meet goals and objectives.
  • Meet quantitative and qualitative performance metrics, established annually by supervisor.
  • Provide input on annual travel budget to supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions, Fundraising (highest ranked Gift Planning Officer):

  • Direct and manage the operations of a robust planned giving function for the Foundation.
  • Secure planned giving consultants, vendors and a peer network of planned giving experts to assist with the development and management of the NMSU Foundation planned giving program.
  • Oversee the Charitable Gift Annuity program, ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the research, identification, and engagement of planned giving prospects through building and maintaining relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Recommend benchmarks to the VP of Development for evaluating the effectiveness and success of the planning giving program; research, recommend, and implement improvements as appropriate.
  • Create and/or promote internal and external training and education on planned giving principles.
  • Produce or assist in producing marketing materials to support gift planning efforts.
  • Oversee the stewardship of the Foundation’s planned giving donors (1888 Society members) through special events, newsletters, and other opportunities for recognition.
  • Plan and execute conferences, workshops and seminars focused on wealth management and gift planning for donors, alumni and friends of NMSU.

 Essential Functions, Supervision (Senior Director of Gift Planning, only):

  • Create and foster an environment conducive to high performance and a cohesive team; mentor and manage staff maintaining clear monthly goals and annual performance reviews; develop performance plans with the VP of Development and conduct reviews.
  • Assess effectiveness of staff, processes, procedures, resource allocation, and strategies. Lead constructive change through collaborative, inspiring approaches. Build high-performing team through clear articulation of expectations, establishment of standards of accountability, and guidance of staff toward desired outcomes.
  • Monitor progress toward individual, unit, and team goals by monitoring fundraising totals.
  • Manage staff toward development of effective, individualized solicitation strategies that lead to successful closing of gifts.
  • Meet regularly with Vice President of Development to review team and individual staff performance.
  • Identify and resolve barriers to team/unit success, in collaboration with Development leadership, and with deans and unit directors, if applicable.
  • Develop and monitor approved operating budget; ensure strategic resource allocation to support achievement of Foundation goals.
  • Manage the daily tasks of a team.
  • Perform occasional process audits and provide reports and metrics to ensure process standards are maintained.
  • May lead or assist in the hiring, orientation and training of development officers and coordinators. Maintain confidentiality.

Other duties may be assigned similar to the above consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of the duties may be assigned to a position.

Minimum Required Education, Knowledge, Experience & Certification/License:

  • An energetic, well-grounded, innovative, service-oriented personality and calculated risk taker with a bias for action, a record of setting and surpassing objectives, and the proven “can do” attitude and drive to execute strategies and produce results beyond expectations.
  • Must be willing and able to travel regionally and nationally.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required coinciding with events and meetings. Ability to work flexible schedule.
  • High degree of ethical conduct, integrity, dependability, use of sound judgment, diplomacy, and resourcefulness, that will inspire confidence with colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters relating to sensitive donor relations issues.
  • Familiar with a PC environment, including strong skills in using the computer as a tool for analysis, planning, and management. Ability to function in a highly networked environment using Microsoft Office.
  • Effective communicator and collaborator who excels in connecting with diverse internal and external constituents.
