Code Nation is a community of high school students, technologists, teachers, business leaders, and other champions. A movement spanning cities, cultures, and industries, our community builds bridges across social and economic divides and unites people with the power to change each others’ lives.

Code Nation equips students with the skills, experiences, and connections that together create access to careers in technology. With a volunteer teaching cohort of over 300 professional web and software developers and a network of school and company partners, we provide coding courses and work-based learning programs to students who attend under-resourced high schools. Our industry-aligned curriculum and vast network of supporters provide students with the tech skills and social capital they need to break into the tech workforce.

During the 2019-2020 school year, Code Nation pivoted to reach 1,630 students in 72 programs across the Bay Area, Chicago, and New York City, 100% virtually. Software developers collectively volunteered more than 45,000 hours to provide in-person and remote learning in support of Code Nation’s mission in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and New York City.

The Role

We are looking for someone who believes program data is a powerful organizational tool to refine programs, articulate programs’ impact, and secure the funding needed to be a sustainable business. The ideal candidate has previous experience designing and conducting program evaluation, refining data collection tools such as surveys, cleaning data, and conducting training for staff members on how to analyze large data sets to compile actionable insights.

The Senior Program Data & Evaluation Manager will be tasked with creating org-wide visibility for the program data that is collected and ensuring internal stakeholders have the information needed to make tactical and strategic decisions. As an ideal candidate for this position, you will be someone who has experience in building effective relationships with peers and training staff members to analyze large datasets and compile actionable insights. You should also enjoy working with diverse groups of internal stakeholders across regions and teams, as well as external contractors and stakeholders such as school district personnel.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $90,000.

Location is remote friendly, but must be within reasonable commuting distance to one of the regional offices for monthly or quarterly meetings.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Consistent & Ethical Impact Evaluation Design

• Ensure consistency in evaluation strategy (i.e., data collection and storage, analysis, reporting, and dissemination) across all programmatic initiatives
• Continuously refine evaluation strategy according to stakeholder feedback, shifting organizational priorities, and industry-wide best practices (e.g., proficiency and mastery-based learning, human subjects research, and survey design)
• Collaborate with school district personnel and external consultants to ensure impact evaluation strategy is ethically designed and approved by district and/or contracted Institutional Review Boards (IRB)

Data Collection, Cleaning, & Processing

• Design and refine program data collection processes (e.g., design surveys, create or support creation of gradebook and other skills assessment tools) to align with evaluation strategy and support equitable and effective decision-making across teams (e.g., programs, curriculum, volunteer recruitment)
• Train and direct regional staff (e.g., regional data leads, program directors) to ensure data collection strategy is implemented and aligned to region-specific contexts
• Clean raw data (e.g., duplicate enrollments, incorrect enrollment dates, or missing data)
• Collaborate with regional data leads and program staff to troubleshoot human errors and improve data collection processes to minimize errors
• Process raw data for analysis (e.g., use regular expressions or search formulas to extract substrings, use logical formulas to aggregate or disaggregate data for summarization)
• Collaborate with Salesforce Administrator to optimize data collection and storage tools and ensure Salesforce architecture supports reliable storage of programmatic data

Data Analysis & Dissemination

• Analyze data (e.g., exploratory data analysis, summarization, and visualization) to support the refinement of programming and inform equitable and effective decision-making
• Create visibility for program data analyses by preparing reports for a variety of audiences (e.g., programs team, Code Nation staff, development team, leadership and/or executive team, Board of Directors)
• Maintain and create accessible data summaries (currently exists on Google Sheets) and dashboards to provide key program metrics across aggregated and disaggregated groups (e.g., by region, program type, program level, racial/ethnic identity, gender identity) to internal teams
• Support regional leads with the implementation of regular data reflections to improve regional implementation of programs
• Design processes to manage and fulfill ad-hoc data analyses requests for regions and departments

Staff Training

• Refine and deliver training to internal staff to ensure understanding of evaluation strategy and outcomes
• Collaborate with Salesforce Administrator to deliver professional development training to regional data leads to enhance data fluency, Salesforce reporting capabilities, and peer management skills
• Support professional development and decision-making of program managers and volunteer teams by creating ad-hoc training as needed
• Support teams in proactively utilizing data to inform decision-making and strategy
• Maintain and create documentation for Code Nation’s evaluation strategy and data collection processes

Skills and Qualifications

Success in this position will require, but not be limited to, the following proven experiences and competencies:

What you’ve accomplished (required):

• 5-7+ years of professional experience working with diverse groups within an education nonprofit organization, school district, foundation, government agency, or for-profit organization
• 3+ years working on data collection, analysis, and dissemination
• Experience in a role in which Salesforce or similar CRM software and survey creation tools were used
• Experience creating scalable systems for data collection, cleaning, analysis (e.g., summaries, visualizations, dashboards), and dissemination

What you’ve either done or would be excited to learn here:

• Proficiency with Google Suite
• Experience in an aligned organization with a focus on coding, technology, and/or collegiate education preferred
• Skills you have developed and knowledge you have acquired:
• Ability to work independently to break down vision and direction of work into actionable steps and leverage manager for strategic support rather than execution accountability
• Demonstrated ability to organize and keep track of many projects, meet deadlines, and handle and prioritize simultaneous requests
• Ability to work collaboratively within and across functions
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization and collaborate across multiple teams
• Ability to work cross-functionally to support program execution, affect organizational change, and mature an organization’s data practice
• Ability to critically evaluate programmatic needs, design and conduct program evaluations and surveys, and analyze data
• Proficient knowledge of advanced Excel formulas
