The Position

The Accounting Manager is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Director of Operations and is responsible for managing the financial resources of the organization on a daily basis including accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and the MALT system of internal controls.

The Ideal Candidate

  • 3+ years experience in non-profit fund accounting
  • Working knowledge of:generally accepted accounting principles
  • Experience with departmental and organizational budgeting
  • Non-profit financial management
  • Financial forecasting
  • Well versed in MS Office
  • Ability to plan, organize, and carry through projects effectively, independently, and with close attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to plan, organize, assign, review, and evaluate the work of consultants and co-workers; train staff in work procedures
  • Understand, interpret, and explain a wide variety of principles, rules, and regulations pertaining to non-profit financial management and accounting
  • work effectively with and advise MALT leadership
  • operate using excellent organizational skills; effectively communicate orally and in writing; prepare clear and concise written reports; establish and maintain effective, relationships with other employees
  • utilize electronic information systems and analyze and interpret such information; use Abila MIP and related software to collect data, perform analyses, and prepare projections and reports
  • use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Day to Day

Responsible for day-to-day functioning of the finance department, including:

  • Check mailbox and process incoming mail and deposits as needed Process deposits, including checks, EFTs, stock gifts
  • Process payroll 
  • Process accounts payable 
  • Monitor investments and provide information to MALT leadership and Finance & Investment Committee on necessary transactions

Support the onboarding and offboarding of staff, including: 

  • Administer benefits, including enrollment in medical insurance and retirement plans
  • Process last paycheck & final paperwork
  • Cascading MALT policies and procedures
  • Employee file creation

Month and Year-End

Responsible for month-end and year-end close of accounting system including:

  • Prepare and post journal entries
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts on a monthly and quarterly basis
  • Reconcile quarterly payroll tax returns with general ledger
  • Monitor and report on budget vs. actual performance
  • Preparation of annual 1099 and 1096 reporting


Participate in annual audit and tax filing preparation with outside CPA firm, including:

  • Plan and prepare schedules
  • Serve as liaison during fieldwork
  • Responsible for meeting deadlines set by outside CPA firm
  • Review drafts
  • Attend Audit Committee meetings and prepare minutes

Budget Planning Support

Support budget planning, including:

  • Produce financial reports related to budgets, account payables, account receivables, expenses, revenues, financial activities, financial position statements, and investment accounts
  • ​​Track budgets and record transactions for restricted gifts and grants

Board Committee Support

Support Finance and Investment Committee, including:

  • Assist in the preparation of agendas and packets for quarterly meetings
  • Attend meetings and prepare minutes

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with multi-state registration requirements
  • Respond to ad hoc reporting requests
  • Assist with office services as requested
  • Assist with MALT special events as requested
