Organizer Zero (OZ) is a project of New Venture Fund (NVF), a 501(c)(3) public charity that incubates new and innovative public-interest projects and grant-making programs. Organizer Zero supports The Powerful Parent Movement (PPM); a network of local parent-led advocacy organizations across the U.S. united under the common purpose of challenging and overcoming the barriers to an excellent and equitable education for every child. In 2015, Organizer Zero helped launch The Memphis LIFT, the first Powerful Parent Movement organization, and since then they have collaborated with local parent leaders in seven U.S. cities and mobilized more than 10,000 parents.

Organizer Zero amplifies the impact of local leaders in their own communities and supports them to create an unstoppable national movement through its commitment to the following actions:

  1. Provides sustained and robust training and technical support to local movements in leadership development, movement building and non-profit management at all stages of local movements' maturity (e.g., start-up, growing and mature) to promote continuous improvement in all six actions of a local site's Core Work.
  2. Builds a vibrant learning community among leaders of local movements by creating regular opportunities for them to share learnings, foster personal and supportive relationships, and cultivate a strong and positive culture among leaders necessary for fueling a national movement.
  3. Identifies and prepares new leaders to build growing movements in new communities by responding to emerging interest with robust early-stage support from both Organizer Zero and local PPM leaders.
  4. Facilitates catalytic national actions by co-creating strategy with PPM leaders and managing logistics on campaigns that involve collaboration among multiple local movements.
  5. Amplifies powerful parent voices by working with local PPM leaders to create an inspiring overarching narrative about their work and identifying opportunities for PPM leaders to communicate their ideas through the media and other national platforms.
  6. Maximizes movement resources and infrastructure by raising money to cover Organizer Zero's costs so that its support is free to local sites and achieving economies of scale by building opt-in movement-wide financial, legal, and impact measurement systems capable of serving all local sites.

To continue its mission of empowering parents across the U.S., Organizer Zero seeks a Movement Building Director to serve as an architect, strategist and coach for parent leaders in running effective advocacy campaigns and all the component parts of doing the same--organizing and mobilizing, public communications, policy, etc. Operating with kindness, authenticity, encouragement and respect, the Movement Building Director demonstrates a relentless commitment to nurture and advance the leadership potential in the parents they support.

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Movement Building Director will be a member of the Organizer Zero Support Team. Ultimately, this person is responsible for ensuring that OZ builds parent leaders' capacity to leverage their collective power across multiple U.S. communities to seize regional and national opportunities together when it strategically advances the movement.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited:

  • Building authentic, meaningful relationships with teammates, city leaders, and their teams
  • Developing local campaigns, campaign actions, and outreach in partnership with city leaders and support team members
  • Providing direct, strategic support to city leaders on campaign implementation
  • Creating a trajectory of learning experiences and aligned materials to build parents' capacity to increasingly effectively and independently implement their own successful campaigns
  • Deploying team members, external experts, and city leaders to implement this set of learning experiences as needed Supporting city leaders in capitalizing on strategic moments to advance the national movement

You balance a learning and action orientation by constantly identifying opportunities and challenges, defining pathways forward, and investing others in solutions. You are also willing to challenge the standard thinking with new ideas, new approaches, and innovations.
  • You cede control. You understand that this work is not about you. You embrace a practice that focuses on elevating the voices of those most impacted and you never speak for or on behalf of local leaders. You see their value as critical as those with professional bona fides when it comes to education reform advocacy. You are committed to working with parent leaders and their teams to develop, promote, and advance their leadership capabilities. You know that your success lies in cultivating, promoting and advancing the leadership and voices of those whose children are impacted by the failure of our public school system and you understand the importance of nurturing leaders who will work to solve their community's problems.


  • A proven track record of running all aspects of successful advocacy campaigns; experience with education campaigns a plus
  • Leadership in front end strategy, planning and coordination among different people & functions (i.e., communications, policy, etc.)
  • Ability to run campaigns successfully in partnership with the people most impacted
  • Strong capacity for organizing and mobilizing
  • Experience successfully leading teams toward outcomes (either by direct management or influence)
  • Demonstrate strong instincts around adult learning and support
  • Ability to teach, coach and support in ways that are responsive to leaders' needs
  • Deep understanding of leadership development and grassroots movement-building; provides support in a way that ultimately develops leaders' capacity to independently and successfully implement their own campaigns
  • Strong cultural competence and experience successfully engaging adults who have been under-represented at decision-making tables
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to gracefully manage the demands of a fluid, fast-paced environment
  • Follows through on commitments
