Who We Are

The Climate Action Campaign (CAC) is a highly effective coalition of national climate, conservation, and progressive groups, state and local partners, and key allies working to protect clean air and promote action to limit climate change. The Campaign regularly partners with national and state-based groups, as well as leaders from diverse communities, to promote climate action, defend against attacks on the Clean Air Act and climate change policies, and showcase the unyielding transition to clean energy driven by state, local and federal action.

The Climate Action Campaign seeks to hire a Director of Communications to lead strategic communications for this coalition of diverse environment, justice and public health organizations.

Responsibilities

The Director of Communications has three primary areas of responsibility: (1) driving strategic press and media; (2) coordinating messaging among organizations participating in state field tables and partner groups; and, (3) delivering creative strategies to drive earned, social, opinion and paid media campaigns.

The Director of Communications plays a key role in departmental management, internal communications, and consultant management. The Director of Communications manages a staff of one and coordinates activities of several communications consulting firms. The Director of Communications also works closely with an internal team of digital communications experts.

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications professional, with seasoned media relations, exceptional writing ability, superior organizational and management skills and desire to work in a very collaborative, creative coalition-based atmosphere. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing creative approaches to paid and unpaid media campaigns, social media programs and opinion media drives 
  • Creating, delivering and coordinating message discipline across a coalition of more than a dozen core organizations, dozens of partners and more than 10 state field tables
  • Driving media coverage and building strong relationships with climate, clean energy and environment press
  • Provide leadership and strategic counsel as a member of the communications senior management team, including external and internal communications, message development, digital communications, event planning, field support and customized product development 
  • Lead the development of high-quality communications materials, including issue papers, press releases, op-eds, etc. and oversee vetting, approvals and dissemination of communications and digital materials
  • Drive the development of high-level communications plans and reporting documents
  • Oversee campaign’s specialty media program including building relationships with African American and Latinx media and managing specialty media consultants
  • Collaborate with communications staff of partner organizations on earned media projects such as advertising launches, poll briefings, press conferences, media tours and serve as their point of contact
  • Organize the communications team leadership internal communications, weekly internal team meetings, agendas for communications strategy sessions and weekly management team meetings, and other organization activities 
  • Manage communications support staff, daily and long-term tasking, project management and personnel matters
  • Identify and direct priority activities and manage requests for communications support from CAC departments, allies, partners and affiliates.

Who You Are

CAC seeks to be a first in class rapid response campaign that is results oriented and strives for continual improvement. A successful candidate for this position is a mission-driven, hardworking, creative outside- the-box kind of thinker who demonstrates excellence in all areas of their work who has/is:

  • At least 7-8 years of professional experience in a campaign-style communications position 
  • Proficient at managing staff, projects and budgets  
  • Experience landing strategic media placements and dealing with reporters, editors, editorial boards, columnists, bloggers, broadcast producers and thought leaders
  • Exceptionally strong writing and editing skills
  • Eager to get involved and is someone who works well with other members of the Campaign bringing ideas, information and creativity to all aspects of the work
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced campaign environment
  • Experience working in a coalition-based, or highly collaborative with partner organizations, environment
  • Political judgment to manage external and internal coalition relationships
  • Strong professional judgment about news value of campaign activities
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities effectively in a heavy workload, and project manage and coordinate complex projects
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and creativity
  • On the record and off the record work with the media
  • The ability to communicate priorities and decisions to colleagues in a clear, concise and professional manner

Reporting

This position reports to the Senior Communications Strategist and the Campaign Director.

Successful applicants will receive a phone screen conducted by the staff of The Griffin Partnership and be asked to complete a Questionnaire regarding their experience. The next round of interviews will involve a virtual interview (over Zoom) with members of the Climate Action Campaign Hiring Team. After that interview, finalists will be asked to complete a skills-based exercise. There will be another interview with other team members of the Climate Action Campaign before a successful applicant is chosen. Reference checks will be conducted prior to presenting an offer to the successful candidate.

This hiring process is on a fast track and applications may only be accepted for a limited period of time. We hope to have someone start the beginning of March or sooner.

Salary

This is a full-time exempt position based in Washington, DC, though our teams are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. We will return to the office once it is safe to do so. The target salary for this position is $95,000 based on experience. We offer an excellent benefits package which includes 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, and a 401k plan.
