Manager, Development and Communications

The Manager of Development and Communications will join DASH’s development team to grow the fundraising capacity and reach new audiences through strategic communications. This role will focus on growing our mid-level donor base and corporate partnerships while working closely with the development team, programs, and learning and data team to communicate our organizational impact through branded content and storytelling. 

This role requires strong project management, organizational, and solid communication, research, and writing skills. Superior attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple requests are critical. A high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with senior leadership is imperative. This is a dynamic role where efficiency and exceptional client services are prized, and a high degree of emotional intelligence is expected. This position is hybrid (in-person & remote) located in Washington DC. 

Development (50% LOE) 

  • Oversee small donor portfolio, increasing individual giving through donor solicitation and stewardship initiatives led by the Director of Individual Giving. 
  • Manage all aspects from creation to production of DASH’s direct mail program, including copywriting and design. 
  • Strengthen relationships and grow monthly donor program and low-to-mid level donor portfolio in coordination with the Director of Individual Giving for moves management. 
  • Lead the growth of corporate fundraising through identification and direct solicitation of prospects for event sponsorships, crowdfunding campaigns, in-kind, and capital investments. 
  • Identify prospects for individual support, conduct prospect research, initiate and conduct direct outreach and solicitation-- independently and/or in partnership with senior leadership. 
  • Manage all fundraisers, including planning and execution. Secure and manage donor-hosted and other events as needed, working with the Chief Development & Communications Officer and Director of Individual Giving. 
  • Serve as a community representative, facilitate presentations for the Development Team, deliver presentations to local businesses, faith-based groups, and community associations at tabling and outreach events. 
  • Secure in-kind contributions for events, programs, and facilities, including identifying and partnering with local community groups and businesses. 
  • Engage community and corporate volunteers, partner with the Associate, Donor and Volunteer Relations staff on volunteer projects. 

Communications (35% LOE) 

  • Develop annual communication and social media strategy, leveraging social analytics to increase fundraising and communication goals for the Development Team. 
  • Create all social media content, manage WordPress website updates and social media platforms, increase DASH’s reach and engagement, ensure consistent use of organization brand, mission, and messaging. 
  • Develop compelling digital content, such as infographics, to share data and information more widely and reach broader audiences. Support leadership and Chief of Staff by drafting strategic updates for slide decks and compelling email communications. 
  • Partner with Development and Data, Impact, Systems and Coaching (DISC) teams to design key performance indicators, metrics, and dashboards for DASH marketing collateral and President & CEO presentations as needed. 
  • Evaluate platform analytics for impact and success through quarterly reports, adapt engagement strategies accordingly. 
  • Partner with programs to secure success stories and testimonials and create new ways of storytelling. Liaise with Chief of Staff in ensuring storytelling collateral are readily accessible and continuously incorporated into dashboards for DASH leadership presentations as needed. 
  • Design and write copy for printed and e-newsletters, press releases, fundraising appeals, annual report, brochures, and other collateral. Create short videos for use in social media, newsletters, and donor thank yous. 
  • Build and maintain media contact list and build partnerships with local media representatives; Prepare staff for interviews as needed; Serve as organizational liaison for media inquiries. 
  • Keep abreast of DASH’s work, and participate actively in relevant team meetings, with the goal of identifying and developing fundable opportunities that support strategy. 

Cross-Organizational Engagement (15% LOE) 

  • Collaborate with the Programs, Development, Finance, and Executive teams to share resources, enhance communication skills, and debrief lessons learned to inform DASH's mission delivery. 
  • Partake in and sometimes lead professional development sessions at the DASH Academy, an in-house, signature professional development institute for staff. 
  • Work with the Development team, contributing to DASH’s culture of philanthropy through telling and supporting relevant stories and efforts to elevate DASH’s mission and people. 
  • Support the President & CEO, and Development team in promoting a culture of philanthropy across all organization departments. 
  • Support the Development and Executive Teams in reinforcing an inclusive culture of care, transparency, trust, collaboration, and fun – where all DASH employees feel welcomed, appreciated, and have equal access to opportunity. 

Other duties as assigned or required. 

Education

  • BA/BS in business, psychology, social services, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Experience

  • 3-5 years fundraising and communication experience, particularly including special events and individual and corporate giving. 
  • Experience managing online platforms: websites and social media accounts, including knowledge of WordPress. 
  • Experience with layout and graphic design software. 
  • Demonstrated ability to convey information on relevant issues to different audiences. 
  • Initiative to personally request and secure investments from individuals, corporations, and community groups. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities, strong time management skills. 
  • Flexibility, creativity, and initiative required to create new opportunities. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to collaborate and work effectively with a diverse group of donors, volunteers, and staff. 
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekend hours for fundraising events and opportunities. 
  • Experience in domestic and sexual violence service or housing/homeless services is a plus. 

Technical Requirements: 

Proficiency in the following software programs is necessary for this role: 

  • Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint 
  • Project Management Platforms (Trello, Asana, Planner) 
  • CRM Platforms - Network for Good preferred (Salesforce, DonorPerfect) 
  • Communication Platforms (Constant Contact) 
  • Graphic Design Sites (Canva) 
  • Websites (WordPress) 
  • Analytic Platforms (Hootsuite, Google Analytics)
