About Beauty Bus

Beauty Bus was founded in memory of Melissa Marantz Nealy, whose life was cut short at the young age of 28 by a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Melissa became homebound as her disease progressed. In an effort to lift her spirits, her family arranged for in-home haircuts, manicures, and facials. Melissa said these treatments made her feel "human again."

The impact on Melissa's emotional well-being was profound. She felt nurtured by the beauty professionals who provided a momentary escape from her disease. Melissa’s family founded Beauty Bus Foundation in 2009 to offer this same experience of dignity, hope and respite to other families when they need it most.

Beauty Bus proudly meets patients where they are! That could mean giving a haircut in an out-patient setting or a manicure in a social service agency. It could also mean giving a facial in a patient’s own hospital room. Beauty Bus is there to offer comfort and support. Illness and disability affects the whole family. That’s why we serve family caregivers right alongside patients. Caring for people in need is what we’re all about.

Position Overview

Beauty Bus is currently looking for a passionate and experienced individual to lead our small but mighty team. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Beauty Bus’ nonprofit's staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The ED will spend the first six months developing a deep knowledge of the beauty industry, medical and integrative medicine, and Beauty Bus’ core programs, operations, and fundraising strategies. This role will manage a Program Manager and a Development Manager.

The ideal Executive Director believes deeply in the power of self-care and wellness, and harnesses the tactical skills to strategically lead fundraising and overall operations. This role is based out of Los Angeles and will require commutability to the LA-based office as needed.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director’s Primary Responsibilities include:

Leadership & Management:

• Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, impact evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
• Actively engage and energize Beauty Bus staff, volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders
• Foster and support a strong Board of Directors; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations
• Lead, mentor, develop, and retain Beauty Bus staff
• Manage the communications team to ensure strong brand visibility and awareness
• Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents

Fundraising & Communications:

• Build upon new and existing revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support the existing operating budget of $800k and future growth
• Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities to identify and build network maps of prospect donors (individuals and institutions)
• Ability to build and maintain a forecasting tool to track fundraising progress and partnership development
• Full understanding of the donor life cycle (e.g. identify, qualify, cultivate, ask, steward) and a depth of experience of strategies and approaches to drive differentiation
• Ability to oversee team and stakeholders towards strong data integrity
• Proven track record of securing 4- and 5- figure gifts from various sources (individual, corporate, institutions, foundations)

Planning & New Business:

• Collaborate with Executive Committee of Board of Directors and Program Manager to develop and execute a two-year strategic plan
• Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with the funders, and political and community leaders
• Represent Beauty Bus at all times, but specifically in local and national media, in a way that highlights the successes of the program and the humanity of our stakeholders

Compensation, Benefits & Flexibility

• Salary: Range $110,000-$120,000, to commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus a performance-based bonus structure
• Benefits: Strong benefits package provided
• Flexibility to work remotely unless needed for specific in-office meetings
