Basics of Trout Fishing

Ever wanted to explore the pleasures of fishing but don’t know how to start? Join Ranger Mike Faus to learn the basics of fishing on the watershed. Our day will have three parts. You are welcome to attend all three parts of the event or only one or two. See the details below:

Part I: Instruction session and Q&A (9:00 - 10:30 a.m.)

Meet at Sky Oaks Ranger Station reception desk (you may park in the employee lot behind the building) at 9am for instructions that will answer questions such as:

• What can we fish for in the reservoirs? (Primarily rainbow trout)
• How do I set up a sliding sinker rig?
• What regulations do I need to know to fish on Mt Tam?

Part II: Fishing Derby (10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.)

After learning fishing best practices at Sky Oaks Ranger Station we will head to Bon Tempe Lake for a Fishing Derby. Rangers will walk along the Sunnyside tail to assist anglers. If you would only like to participate in the derby spread out anywhere along sunnyside trail - you can park at Bon Tempe Dam or Lake Lagunitas Lot. Parking Passes are not provided. please purchase a parking pass across from the Sky Oaks Ranger Station.

Part III: Fishing Derby Celebration (2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

Come back to the Ranger Station around 2:30 to show off your catch, your photos, and your stories. Prizes will be awarded!

We will provide bait, sliding sinkers, snap swivels, and hooks. Participants must bring their own rod and reel. Family friendly! People age 16+ must have a CA Fishing License.
