    At-Large DC Councilmember Christina Henderson is seeking a Legislative Assistant with excellent organizational, research, and communication skills. The primary responsibility of this role is to manage the preparation, execution, and follow-up of Committee on Health hearings, roundtables, and meetings at the Council of the District of Columbia. This will include coordinating with other Council offices and staff, District agencies, nominees to Council-appointed positions, and other stakeholders. Other responsibilities for this role include leading the Committee’s appointment process for Health Licensing Board members as well as health policy research and legislative drafting. A successful applicant for the Legislative Assistant position will be interested in pursuing a career in health policy, detail-orientated, comfortable with virtual meeting platforms and Microsoft Office Suite, capable at managing multiple projects and deadlines, a collaborative team member, and passionate about serving DC residents.

    Responsibilities

    • Health Hearing and Meeting Coordination: Lead the scheduling of hearings, filing of hearing notices, and the preparation of witness lists, including communicating with public and government witnesses and other Councilmember offices.
    • Audio/Video Management: Orchestrate hybrid hearings utilizing web-conferencing software (e.g., Zoom and YouTube).
    • Health Licensing Board Nomination Management: Coordinate the Committee on Health’s appointment process for Health Licensing Board nominees, including reviewing nominees’ CVs/resumes, making recommendations on whether nominees are qualified to serve, and drafting confirmation roundtable questions and Committee reports on nominations.
    • Legislative and Research Support: Conduct research and write memos on health policy topics for the Committee on Health, with opportunities for legislative drafting.

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with stakeholders.
    • Organization: Capability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, strong organizational abilities, high attention to detail for managing filing deadlines, legislative requirements, public testimony, and hearing processes.
    • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) and capability to manage virtual meeting technology.
    • Professionalism: Ability to work effectively under pressure.
    • Experience: Previous experience in health policy, a legislative office, or an administrative environment is preferred.

    Requirements: Undergraduate degree preferred. Minimum 2 years of work experience, including part-time work and internships. Residency in the District of Columbia within six months of hire is required. This position is a full-time, in-person role which requires attendance Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004.

    Compensación

    The Council of the District of Columbia offers a compensation package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; long- and short-term disability program; a 457(b) program with a 3 percent employer match and a 5 percent entirely-employer funded contribution; 13 to 26 days of annual leave, based on years of employment; 13 days of sick leave; 11 paid holidays; and subsidized public transportation. Eligibility for student loan repayment assistance after one year of service.
