    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS:

    The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers. 

    ABOUT THE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER:

    The Community Learning Center (CLC) empowers a diverse community of adult learners to transform their lives and realize their potential through education, skills development, and community participation. Learners are predominantly low-income Cambridge residents and come from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds. They are enrolled in English classes or Adult Education for high school equivalency, employment training, or preparation for college. Classes meet 2-3 mornings per week or 2 evenings per week. Watch these videos to learn more about us 

    ABOUT THE ROLE:

    The Instructional Aide is responsible for assisting teachers in supporting adult students in our Adult Education for high school equivalency and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs. Instructional Aides work with 1 or more classrooms 2 evenings per week.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • We are looking for a dynamic individual who will...
    • Assist teacher(s) with instruction and student engagement
    • Support learners in whole class, small group, and 1-1 instruction
    • Perform related duties to support students/cohorts as designated by the classroom teacher(s), such as materials modification and photocopying
    • Maintain a positive and inclusive environment in and outside of the classroom

     

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner population
    • Ability to break down a task to help a student learn
    • Good organization and computer skills (email, MS Office suite, Google suite)
    • Excellent people skills and ability to take initiative

     PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Experience teaching or tutoring adults in a community-based setting
    • Life or work experience with people with disabilities
    • Bilingual/bicultural identity
    • A passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and learning new things

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS:

    • General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting; work to be performed onsite.
    • Job requires work onsite 2 evenings per week
    • Job requires computer use. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
    • Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
