COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATE

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis’ office has an immediate full-time opening for an experienced Communications Associate.

Supervisor Solis is proud to serve LA County’s First District, which is home to two million residents, across 246 square miles, from several diverse communities: from East Los Angeles to East Hollywood, MacArthur Park to Eagle Rock, and Alhambra to Pomona. The candidate must be community-oriented with a passion for public policy, politics, and media communications.

The Communications Associate candidate must have strong digital media, media relations, and writing experience. The candidate must be detailed-oriented, motivated, a self-starter, adaptable, able to problem solve and multi-task, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must also have the ability to maintain confidentiality of various projects and correspondence, in addition to written and oral communication. Knowledge of a second language spoken in the District is preferred. 

Duties:

  • Review Board of Supervisors agendas; 
  • Compile press clips;
  • Draft press releases, quotes, remarks, talking points, media advisories, letters, fact sheets, and other materials;
  • Upload event photos onto a public platform;
  • Create event flyers and ads and translate content into English and Spanish;
  • Draft articles in English and Spanish for the Supervisor’s weekly newsletter;   
  • Compile daily news articles (local, state, national, international) that are relevant to the First District;
  • Produce copy and visual content for social media and maintain the Supervisor’s social media platforms, e.g.:  Facebook, Threads, and Instagram;   
  • Track media coverage;  
  • Assist in maintaining web content;    
  • Prepare presentations and reports;   
  • Maintain media list;
  • Facilitate effective internal communications; and  
  • Assist in organizing press events.
  • Other essential duties include answering phones, routing mail, copying documents, filing and retrieving information, assembling press kits, and performing research tasks.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently in a high-paced environment;  
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate records;
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously;   
  • Must be a team player;
  • Ability to attend to details while focusing on big-picture goals; 
  • Familiarity with the First District;   
  • Ability to work with racially and socio-economically diverse communities;
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles County systems;    
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize;
  • Pleasant personality with a dynamic professional attitude; and
  • Excellent phone and email etiquette.

Preferred Skill:     

  • Knowledge of a second language spoken in the First District. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Communications Intern/Administrative Assistant/Receptionist working for an elected official, public, or the private sector;
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
  • A valid California class “C” driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

Please note that this is a professional level staff position that will require work hours beyond the normal workday and will include weekend and holiday work.  The position is in-person, full-time, exempt, and unclassified.
