City Year Sacramento relies on its corporate, foundation and individual partners to create sustainable social impact, leveraging both private and public investors. The Managing Director of Development will focus on establishing multi-year contributions, identifying new funding sources and management of current donors.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director of Development (MDD) will oversee a team that will be responsible for achieving the site’s fundraising goals including major gift solicitation, grant writing, event planning, as well as the site’s external communications and marketing efforts. The MDD will serve on the site leadership team, helping to drive and support site-wide initiatives and project.

The Managizg Director of Development will be a highly effective storyteller and relationship builder who can bring to life City Year’s impact in schools using strong presentation and communication skills that capture the hearts and minds of potential donors and inspires them to support City Year’s mission. 

This position is ideal for someone who is entrepreneurial, with proven fundraising experience, who is a proactive leader, creative problem solver, and strategic thinker with an aptitude for relationship development.


 RESPONSIBILITIES

The principle responsibilities of the Managing Director of Development is:

  • Develop and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that meets the current goal of raising $1.2 million from the private sector, and anticipates future needs and growth objectives
  • Represent, respect, and role-model City Year’s organizational culture and values grounded in diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity, both internally as a member of the site Senior Leadership Team, and externally as a primary representative of the organization
  • Lead a three-person development team


Fundraising Strategy and Execution  

Establish short and long-range goals for restricted and unrestricted funding sources, while leading the team in developing strategies to approach donors. Including the cultivation of new donors (i.e. donor outreach and engagement and helping to increase the pipeline of new private sector business).

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, Board Members, and the City Year headquarters’ development office, a key initiative is to develop and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that meets current goals and anticipates future needs and growth objectives.
  • Manage a development team that’s responsible for following a strategic plan, resulting in the execution of a $1.2+ million fundraising campaign.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of special events to raise the awareness of City Year, fundraise and engage individuals, foundations and corporations as champions and donors. Such events include, but are not limited to, Opening Day, Annual Fundraising Dinner Event, specialty market events and AmeriCorps member graduation. 


Major Gift / Donor Support

  • Develop innovative strategies to promote and increase individual giving.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and future major donors.


External Relations

  • Oversee the overall execution of a communications and marketing strategy including planning and implementation of communications and public relations activities, the production of new and review of existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness and adherence to brand guidelines, and overseeing web content management as well as e-news creation and distribution.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Board Chairs to manage a Philanthropy Committee that supports the outreach and fundraising of board members, by ensuring 100% participation in board giving campaign.


Financial Reporting

  • Oversees the requirements, and processes for reporting accurate revenue.
  • Oversee and manage revenue budgets and event budgets.
  • Provide monthly and as needed revenue reports to Executive Director, Board, and Headquarters staff.


Corporate and Foundation Management

  • Manage the identification and cultivation of new corporate and foundation partnerships, as well as the grant proposal and reporting processes for these supporters.
  • Collaborate with national HQ corporate development staff to manage and build City Year’s Team Sponsorship ($100,000 per year) through identifying and securing new Team Sponsors and increasing sponsorship of existing donors.    


Organizational Initiatives

  • Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site’s local operating plan as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Work collaboratively with other site departments on a frequent basis and with City Year’s national and regional staff
  • Assume other tasks as delegated by the Executive Director.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Development/Fundraising: Experience leading major giving campaigns and success securing fundraising from multiple local donor markets with established relationships (corporate, foundation, and major gift solicitation and cultivation). Comparable experience will be considered. Ability to align City Year’s mission and vision through a diverse, inclusive, and equitable lens.
  • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects. Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones. Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently.
  • Communications: Skilled in creating compelling written and oral communications for fundraising ask. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to internal and external audiences of varying levels of seniority.
  • Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win-win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders.
  • Relationship Building: Skilled at cultivating meaningful relationships that result in securing both monetary and in-kind multi-year support. Knowledge, understanding and relationships with the Sacramento donor community, strongly preferred.
  • People Management: Ability to build and lead a diverse team to meet individual, team and site goals. Experience managing and coaching staff through interpersonal and professional development
  • Direct experience with Development/Fundraising; advanced degrees considered.
  • Experience serving and advocating for under-resourced populations, preferably in an educational setting.

Compensación
