Founded in 1972, PEC is a locally based, community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit and accredited land trust. At the core of PEC’s approach is a focus on educating, engaging and empowering people to effect positive change in their communities.

Your Role

The Publications Assistant will facilitate the production of The Piedmont Environmental Council’s quarterly member newsletter, Piedmont View, an 8-12-page tabloid sized newsprint publication highlighting PEC’s work, and other print publications as needed, in support of the following communications goals:

  1. Build a network of reliable activists, donors and members
  2. Influence decision-makers to reach better outcomes
  3. Increase positive awareness of PEC and build support for a full range of PEC programs
  4. Change behavior and foster an ethic of good stewardship of the Piedmont’s natural resources, historic and cultural resources, and the environment as a whole.

Areas of Responsibility

The Publications Assistant is a member of PEC’s outreach and communications team and will report to the co-director of outreach and communications. Examples of responsibilities and activities include:

  • Manage and execute the production of PEC’s quarterly newsletter, The Piedmont View, and other publications as they arise, including, but not limited to, setting timelines, communicating with authors and content providers, working with designers, printers, and mailing houses, coordinating imagery, maps, lists with PEC staff, etc.
  • Edit and proof copy in collaboration with advancement, communications and outreach, and other program staff using AP Style Guidelines and with an eye toward accuracy, clarity, and messaging in line with PEC’s brand.
  • Conceptualize, research, and write engaging pieces for PEC’s print and online platforms that convey the impact of PEC’s work.
  • Assist communications team, PEC’s president, and program staff with developing and implementing creative communications strategies.
  • Assist with PEC events and field projects as necessary.

This hybrid position is based out of PEC’s headquarters office in Warrenton, VA, with rare travel to locations within PEC’s nine-county service area, Richmond and the D.C. metro area.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong project planning and project management skills, taking complex projects from conception to completion on schedule and within budget.
  • Demonstrated strong communications and storytelling skills, both written and oral, including the ability to compile, condense, write, edit and proof written materials.
  • Proficiency applying AP style and editorial rules and effectively using electronic editing tools.
  • Ability to work on numerous deadline projects simultaneously, at varying stages of production.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative abilities, including the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and work styles.
  • Commitment to PEC’s core values, mission and vision.
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) principles.
  • Strong sense of design aesthetic.
  • Reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Competency or strong aptitude for design products such as InDesign, Canva, and Photoshop, and customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, such as Salesforce, EveryAction, etc.
  • Understanding of the nonprofit communication field’s concepts, best practices, procedures and analytics.
  • Communications experience in public policy, with an emphasis on environmental, conservation, and/or land use issues.
