From our staff to our constituents, Technology provides the power to amplify National Geographic’s impact through value-based product delivery, transformational data services, and world-class support and infrastructure services. These services include employee training and technical support, audio/visual production, device management, enterprise architecture, network management, on-premise and cloud computing, information security, identity management, data management and integration, product management, user experience design, software development, systems engineering, and systems administration. Technology is comprised of five teams: Business Products, Constituent Products, Data Products, Infrastructure & Security, and Technology Support Services.

Job Description Summary

The Digital Media Systems Administrator is responsible for the system administration, security, reliability, and availability of the Society’s digital media asset platform, including its Digital Asset Management (DAM) system. Digital asset management and preservation is a key function of the NGS Storytelling team. The Storytelling team works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, and data visualization. The NGS Library and Archives is also managed within the Storytelling team. This position is within the Business Products team and reports directly to the Sr. Media Technology Engineer.


The Digital Media Systems Administrator supports the digital asset management operations, which includes ingesting existing media into the DAM, cataloging and selecting images for use by our partners and within the Society, and making preservation copies of assets that are selected by our archivists. This position works closely with other members of the Technology team including architects, system engineers, service desk specialists, and product and delivery managers to maintain stable operations and to further automate key business processes. This includes investigating incidents, addressing problems, and fulfilling service requests as needed.Your Impact

Your Impact & Responsibilities

System Administration (50%)

  • Ingest digital media from the NGS storage attached network and external media devices.
  • Evaluate the potential impact of major vendor software releases.
  • Prepare and execute deployment plans complete with verification and backout procedures for software upgrades and configuration changes.
  • Develop and maintain tests used to verify the operational status of the digital asset management system particularly following software upgrades and configuration changes.
  • Develop and maintain monitors to detect operational problems that impact service availability and performance in accordance with established SLIs and SLOs.
  • Restore archived content from cold storage solutions.

Security and Change Management (20%)

  • Manage the access control configuration including defining groups and roles and delegating access control management to digital media operations staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain documentation of key standard operating procedures, including access control management and change management. Provide training to staff as requested.
  • Facilitate the change management process for the DAM, working closely with the DAM Operations team to schedule and execute changes.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled access control audits in accordance with NGS information security policies.

Technical Support (30%)

  • Investigate incidents reported by system monitors or escalated by the digital asset management operations team.
  • Troubleshoot identified problems, including performing root cause analysis.
  • Fulfill service requests submitted by Technology or the digital asset management operations team.
  • Assist in the creation, review, and maintenance of NGS knowledge base resources related to digital asset management such as how-to articles and frequently asked questions.

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

A bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, or a related field is preferred, but not required. Equivalent experience is acceptable.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

A minimum of 3 years of experience in the information technology field with at least 1 or more years of administering a digital asset management system such as Orangelogic Cortex, Bynder, MediaBeacon, MediaValet or Widen.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of and experience using work management software such as Jira, Wrike, ServiceNow, Asana, etc.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, able to explain technical problems to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience creating and updating synthetic tests using enterprise monitoring software such as Datadog, AppDynamics, Nagios, etc.
  • Comfortable working with command line interfaces (CLI).

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience planning and managing work using agile methodologies such as Kanban.
  • Experience working on globally distributed teams.
  • Knowledge of and experience with IT Service Management (ISTM) frameworks and best practices such as ITIL.
  • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests using Selenium.
  • Experience writing, instrumenting, and debugging NodeJS scripts.
  • Experience developing and maintaining behavior driven tests with Jasmine or Mocha/Chai.

The salary range for this position starts at $100,000.

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation continues to require that staff work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their duties or personal circumstances, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
