The work environment at The Praxis Project is fast-paced, creative, and fun, and our team is hardworking and extremely passionate about our mission. This new, senior position will support our ambitious growth and impact goals and also be core participant in Praxis’ Leadership Team.


Position summary


The Senior Director of Programs (SDP) is a newly created role at Praxis with a mandate to lead our programs to meet goals, design and expand new programmatic elements, evaluate and adjust programs, recruit, manage, and develop programmatic staff, grow external partner relationships, manage program budgets in collaboration with finance staff, participate in fundraising in collaboration with other leadership, and serve as a member of the Praxis senior leadership team. Praxis seeks an experienced program director for this role with a demonstrated track record of cultivating and growing programs or initiatives that center community-driven social change. 


The SPD position will design and cultivate Praxis’ “Building Community Power” body of work, which convenes grassroots community organizers to create community, develop relationships, and build power to advance health, equity and racial justice. The SPD will fundraise to develop and grow programmatic activities, as well as provide strategic direction for the program. 


The SDP should be willing and able to work in an environment that emphasizes a team approach and should deeply understand Praxis' overall commitment to addressing issues of racial and economic justice, working with traditionally disenfranchised populations, changing structural conditions to improve the quality of life, and building community power.


The SDP position is permanently remote (works from home) and reports to the Executive Director (ED).


This is a full-time (40 hours per week), benefits eligible, exempt position. Some schedule flexibility during the week is possible if there is close coordination with the ED and other key staff. Overnight travel is required. The salary range for this position is $125,000-$140,000 per year and the final salary will be based on experience, qualifications, and local cost of living where the candidate is based. We use Nonprofit Compensation Associates compensation survey data for the San Francisco Bay Area and Bureau of Labor Statistics and other reputable indices to adjust for cost of living. Praxis provides regular cost-of-living pay changes and substantial employee benefits beyond salary, taking a holistic approach to setting compensation.

Duties and responsibilities


Leadership responsibilities: SPD will be a key member of Praxis’ Leadership Team. Leadership team responsibilities include: 

●       Collaborating with Praxis’ Leadership Team.

●       Interfacing with Praxis’ Board of Directors.

●       Participate in leadership discussions and decision-making regarding overall strategic and operational direction of the organization.

●       Uplifting and advocating for the priorities of the Building Community Power program area, partners, and staff.



Program Direction and Design: SPD is responsible for leading and directing the body of work known as “Building Community Power” at Praxis. This work includes: 

●       Technical assistance, capacity-building, relationship development and community-building with Praxis’ network of basebuilding community organizers. 

●       Praxis’ in-person and virtual Learning Circle convenings (approximately 3-5 convenings per year).

●       Roots and Remedies, Praxis’ annual national convening.

●       Communication channels with our basebuilding network of community organizations to gather feedback, needs for support, technical assistance or capacity-building, and updates on community priorities on an annual basis. 

●       Communications materials such as briefs, reports and presentations of findings and recommendations from grassroots network to Praxis’ philanthropic and public health partners to advance the Praxis network’s health, equity, and racial justice agenda.

●       Relationships with partners, including basebuilding organizers, policymakers, funders, public health, academia, and media.



Fundraising and Budgeting 

●       Lead fundraising efforts for Building Community Power’s programmatic activities.

●       Develop and manage Building Community Power’s programmatic budget.

●       Participate in Praxis’ biannual organizational budget process. 


Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director. 


Required experience

 

●       Minimum 12-15 years of increasingly responsible programmatic work experience in a nonprofit, philanthropic, public interest consulting, or social entrepreneurship setting; minimum five years of leadership experience including staff supervision, are required.

●       Strategic planning and organizational change management experience is required. 

●       Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree or Doctorate in a related field strongly preferred.

●       Proven track record of creating, leading, adapting, and growing programs and programmatic strategies for growth, impact, and visibility.

●       Demonstrated success in fundraising and generating new and minimally restricted resources. 

●       Experience working collaboratively with operations, finance, and/or fundraising and development staff and resources to achieve programmatic growth and goals is required.

●       Staff management and development experience and the desire and ability to oversee and coach teams is required.

●       Substantial experience working with diverse partners and communities of color with experience as a community organizer is required.

●       Experience providing technical assistance, training, and/or other capacity building support to grassroots organizations and community organizers is strongly preferred.


Required qualifications: skills, knowledge, and abilities

 

●       Deeply held personal commitment to social justice and commitment to Praxis’ mission.

●       Exceptional judgment and ability to adapt in rapidly changing situations is required. 

●       Advanced knowledge of and ability to speak confidently and accurately regarding health equity and social justice in the United States, the social determinants of health, systemic racism and racial terror, white supremacy, grassroots community organizing, and health and social justice policy issues. 

●       Advanced knowledge of policy advocacy and the policymaking process, social justice campaign operations and strategy, community organizing, and community-informed policy change is required. 

●       Strong interpersonal skills, relationship-building ability, and high degree of comfort with public speaking and facilitation and/or training; extensive training and outreach experience and/or experience in a role in a network or movement-building or movement intermediary organization is strongly preferred.

●       Research, data synthesis, evaluation, and technical writing skills are required. 

●       Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and ability to engage in culturally competent and non-marginalizing communication are required. Knowledge of people-centered educational methodologies and outreach techniques is preferred. 

●       Advanced knowledge of one or more of the social determinants of health and/or policy environments and challenges facing communities of color in the United States is required.

●       Proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Tagalog, Vietnamese, especially writing, is preferred. 

●       Exceptional detail orientation and appropriate sense of urgency in dynamic situations is required.

●       High level of professional ethics and integrity and the ability to maintain confidential information is required. Experience working within politically targeted movements or organizations is preferred. 

●       Fluency with Google and Microsoft Office apps (including high level of functionality in Excel) and other basic office information technology is required, as is enthusiasm for adopting new systems.



Mental and physical demands

 

●      Fast-paced work environment.

●      High level of concentration and attention to detail required.

●      Time speaking and listening: (range 25–50%).

●      Occasional travel (up to about two trips per quarter) including overnight travel is required.

●      Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. 

●      Praxis currently works remotely both as an internal team and with our partners based across the United States. Leading and participating in remote video and telephone conferences is required.

●      Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and insurance is required for employees driving on Praxis business; driving record checks may be required as well.

●      Due to the in-person and travel-required nature of this role, full and current vaccination against COVID-19 is required, including all recommended and available booster shots.
