Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:45AM - 4:00PM

We are seeking an Academic Intervention Service Teacher to assess students behavioral and academic issues throughout the school and identify children at-risk for learning or academic problems. The AIS Teacher will design, implement, and monitor academic interventions using research-based methodology in reading and math. The Specialist will provide opportunities for students who do not have a basic understanding of skills and/or learning targets during the regular classroom time to receive additional help outside of their regular classroom.

Merrick Academy is one of the first charter schools to open in New York City and the first to open (2000) in Queens. With a rich history and deep roots in the local community, Merrick Academy is an all-inclusive, independent Charter School with approximately 600 students in grades K-5 and a faculty and staff of 90. Queens’ first charter school, Merrick, has been educating children for over 20 years. Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities


  • Design, execute and assess individualized programs based on various factors such as age, gender, and cultural background.
  • Provide expertise and intentional support to students who demonstrate behavioral, social, and educational challenges
  • Provide special direction to students who have been given an Individualized Education Program (I.E.P)
  • Attend to the social, personal, and academic needs of students who have been identified as at-risk of failing
  • Provide detailed documentation of student progress and develop supplementary education that serves as a companion to the general curriculum
  • Assess student’s potential and provide recommendations for further services
  • identified students who need additional assistance or recommended for special education services
  • Work with classroom teachers to create classroom-based intervention plans they will teach to individuals and small groups and support teachers in providing these supports to their students
  • Provide small group instruction in ELA or Math to students who do not make adequate progress with interventions in their classrooms
  • Create goals and objectives with teachers for interventions and maintain appropriate documentation for each
  • Use a data driven approach to determine progress and next steps.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers for seamless curriculum implementation that allows for students to transfer their learning from intervention lessons back to their classroom work.
  • Record each student’s progress through both monitoring forms and marking books. Prepare progress reports (3 times per year) and report cards (4 times per year) and arrange and conduct Parent-Teacher Conferences (3 times per year).
  • Attend, contribute and listen effectively in meetings and conferences
  • Interact with students in a firm, positive and constructive way always
  • Engage in conversation and behavior that uplifts and guides children
  • Recognize and encourage positive behavior


Non-Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities. 
  • Participates in various student and family activities which occur in school including PTO, student clubs and after-school activities. 
  • Knowledgeable of several technology platforms such as google (etc; google doc., and google classroom), zoom and etc;
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate school leader


Qualifications & Behavioral Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • New York State Certification required
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a classroom
  • Proven results closing the opportunity gap for learners
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty and administrators
  • Professional and friendly demeanor and the ability to communicate successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Computer proficiency using email services and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to think and act strategically
  • Passion for contributing to a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture
  • Open to feedback and committed to continuously improving
