About the Position

The Communications Manager plays an important role within The Shed’s Marketing & Communications team, which is charged with developing and driving local, national, and global visibility for The Shed and creating comprehensive campaigns to publicize all performances, exhibitions, programs, initiatives, and events. The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Communications and liaises with other members of the Marketing & Communications team to build awareness for The Shed’s multidisciplinary exhibitions and performances and develop strong relationships with media to foster a broad appreciation for The Shed’s artistic vision and programs. The ideal candidate will be someone who connects deeply with The Shed’s mission and is a creative, deadline-driven, detail-oriented self-starter who works collaboratively and efficiently with colleagues across multiple departments.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Manage and support creative publicity campaigns for Shed programming and initiatives including proactively pitching story ideas to targeted media in trade publications, newspapers, magazines, radio, and online media
  • Craft compelling and accurate press releases, media alerts, pitch letters, fact sheets, presentations, and other communications materials for external and internal audiences
  • Assist with planning events, press previews, openings, and galas
  • Oversee logistics of press photo/video shoots
  • Maintain digital assets for press in DAM (digital management platform) and online press room
  • Coordinate with editorial and marketing staff on key content initiatives and campaigns
  • Manage media databases and press lists
  • Produce and distribute press releases, media alerts, and press event invitations via bulk email system
  • Plan, schedule, and maintain departmental calendars for meetings and events
  • Manage and/or update communications material assets and press ticketing
  • Manage communications schedules and timelines; assist with scheduling media interviews with The Shed’s staff and artists and assist with preparation and research
  • ˜ Monitor, distribute, and archive press placements
  • ˜ Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications and Qualities

  • Five or more years of experience in arts communication, media relations, or publicity
  • Preferred bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Proven interest and/or background in visual and/or performing arts
  • Strategic thinking, strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, thriving in a faced-paced environment with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of NYC arts media landscape and/or key arts journalists
  • Familiarity with G-Suite, Adobe, Wordfly, and project management tools
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Please provide salary requirements with your application.
