Job Title: Chief Operating Officer

Reports To: CEO

Status: Full-time, OT exempt position

Salary Range: $100,980 - $122,400 per Year

Job Summary

Hunger Free Colorado is seeking a dynamic and creative Chief Operating Officer to lead the organization forward in its journey to be an equity-centered, anti-racist organization that can successfully achieve its bold mission of ending hunger in Colorado. We are looking for an individual deeply rooted in a trauma-informed approach to personal and organizational change and growth, who can guide Hunger Free Colorado in building a strong organizational culture rooted in our values of equity, agency, collaboration, respect, innovation, and impact. This position will directly supervise the internal operations team while developing and supporting strong cross-organizational structures and practices. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead organizational efforts to become an anti-racist organization that intentionally works to dismantle elements of white supremacist culture and pursue institutional, systems and policy change to overturn the legacy of systemic racism
  • Partner with an equity consultant to guide and facilitate this work through organization-wide meetings, smaller group meetings/trainings, and one-on-ones
  • Oversee equity and anti-racist organization-wide work, as well as work within each department
  • Lead organization team- and culture-building that is rooted in relationships and organizational values
  • Lead team in developing values-based community agreements to guide group and one-on-one interactions
  • Create and implement organization-wide models for meeting facilitation
  • Model and provide support and guidance for having challenging conversations (large group, small group and one-on-one) rooted in a trauma-informed approach
  • Create intentional spaces within a hybrid work environment for relationship-building and group-bonding
  • Oversee and support development and implementation of best practices in supervision, professional and leadership development, and performance management across the organization, including the use of management tools and the integration of organizational values
  • Have regular meetings with each Director to provide coaching and support around performance management and staff support, as well as the development of an equity-centered culture and approach
  • Support the development of a learning and self-development culture, both personally and organizationally
  • Provide guidance around professional and leadership development, including training opportunities and pathways
  • Oversee and support the development of a cross-departmental, project-based work approach, providing training and guidance as needed
  • Have high-level oversight and overall responsibility for all internal operations, including HR, IT and finance
  • Directly supervise the following team members within the Operations department, overseeing the creation and successful implementation of their work plans:
  • Senior Manager of HR: Oversee and support the development and implementation of equity-centered HR policies and practices
  • Senior Manager of Finance and Operations: Oversee and support the budget development process and integration of equity within operations
  • Senior Data Analyst and Evaluation Specialist: Oversee and support the development of an evaluation and learning process that is equity-centered at every level, individual, department, and project-based work
  • Database Administrator: Oversee and support the effective use of Salesforce and other IT tools to support organizational goals and operations
  • Partner with the CEO who oversees organizing, policy, communications, client services, and development to ensure all departments seamlessly integrate to support organizational activities, goals and values
  • Work with CEO to support Board of Directors

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience supervising and managing staff, including developing workplans, providing feedback, guidance and training, and seeking and offering opportunities for professional development
  • Experience building strong, collaborative, people-focused, equity-centered, values-based organizational culture and structures
  • Exceptional people management skills, including the demonstrated ability to train and support others in developing those skills
  • Experienced in developing a learning and self-development organizational culture
  • Very skilled at, and thrives on, building strong one-on-one relationships with team members
  • Passionate about, and expert in, team building, including through exceptional meeting facilitation skills
  • Expert in facilitating and navigating challenging conversations at the group and one-on-one level, utilizing a trauma-informed approach
  • High-level, strategic thinker
  • Strong intersectional analysis of how structural racism, classism, and gender discrimination contribute to hunger and poverty
  • Strong commitment to, and expertise in, equity-centered, anti-racist practices and approaches
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence and ability to navigate discomfort and challenge
  • Self-starter, creative and highly motivated
  • Very strong organizational skills, including the ability to strategically manage multiple initiatives
  • Keen analytic and problem-solving skills, which support and enable sound decision-making
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Understanding of, and experience with, non-profit budgeting, financial practices and financial management
  • Understanding of, and experience with, non-profit HR policies and practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of, and familiarity with, organizing and policy advocacy a plus
  • Spanish-language fluency is preferred

Work Environment

  • This position will operate in a hybrid fashion, both in-person and remotely through Microsoft office platforms
  • Ability to work in a variety of community-based settings with individuals from various races, backgrounds, cultures, political and religious views
  • Willingness to work a varied schedule beyond core office hours, including some evening and weekend events
  • This position is required to be Colorado-based during and after remote work
  • Ability to attend meetings and events within the Denver Metro area
