The Position 

The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) seeks a strategic, collaborative, data-driven and innovative Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Learning to serve as a key leader within the Office of the President and CEO. 

A newly created role reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Learning will staff the Executive, Senior, and Management Teams, guiding organization-wide planning and evaluation efforts and driving strategies for organizational effectiveness. The Director will leverage their expertise in strategic planning, research, evaluation, and organizational performance management to create and adapt tools to monitor progress and ensure alignment and shared accountability toward achieving the strategic plan at organizational, team, and individual levels.

The Director will play a leadership role across the organization. They will bring best practices and emerging ideas in social justice organizational effectiveness principles to our staff, piloting and guiding a range of projects to improve cross-team collaboration, foster learning and curiosity as we adapt to external and external change, and ultimately help increase our impact. 

This is a full-time exempt position of 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Executive and Senior Leadership teams in establishing annual goals and developing and adapting organizational tools (e.g., dashboards) to monitor progress and ensure alignment and shared accountability toward achieving the strategic plan at organizational, team, and individual levels;
  • Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, staff future strategic planning efforts including any related working groups or committees of staff, Board members, and external consultants;
  • Stay abreast of foundational and emerging social justice organizational effectiveness principles and practices and share these with colleagues; pilot and guide projects to increase organizational effectiveness;
  • Staff the Executive, Senior Leadership, and Management Teams by working closely with the Chief of Staff to oversee critical administrative work such as organizing meeting agendas and background materials, establishing systems, and maintaining the flow of communications within and across these groups through leveraging technology tools and platforms;
  • Work closely with the External Affairs team to facilitate sharing of outcomes information for fundraising and communications purposes;
  • Collaborate with the DEI & Belonging and HR teams on internal communication processes, learning opportunities, and the overlap of DEI & Belonging with organizational effectiveness to foster transparency, highlight successes and wins, promote curiosity and learning, and keep staff apprised of key initiatives and activities and ensure organizational processes and planning reflect our DEI & Belonging principles; and
  • Work with the Chief of Staff to identify and manage other projects to help advance NWLC’s organizational effectiveness goals as needed. Manage other projects for the Chief of Staff as needed.

 

Qualifications 

The candidate must possess: 

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in strategic planning, change management, program evaluation, and organizational effectiveness, ideally in an advocacy nonprofit of similar size and complexity;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience designing and implementing program logic models, theories of change models or similar organizational effectiveness tools and managing research, evaluation, and performance management projects in social justice settings;
  • Proven ability to develop, facilitate, and champion organizational effectiveness and internal communications initiatives through strategic, inclusive, and creative problem solving, project management, and decision-making processes;
  • Experience and passion for using qualitative and quantitative data to make decisions and help people align around shared goals;
  • Demonstrated integrity and sound judgment, including the ability to exercise appropriate discretion when dealing with sensitive or confidential matters;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working on gender and racial equity and centering LGBTQI+ communities and communities of color in the approach to work;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent skills in technology, particularly Microsoft Office, qualitative and quantitative research software, and project management software (Asana or equivalent); and
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

 

Key Relationships

The Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Learning reports directly to the Chief of Staff and supervises a staff member. Additionally, this position collaborates closely with the President and CEO, other Executive and Senior staff, and the Director of Internal Data and Research and other Directors. They may occasionally work with Board members.

Compensation & Benefits

A salary within the range of $122,255-$147,853 will be provided to the successful candidate with 7 to 19+ years of applicable experience, consistent with the National Women’s Law Center’s compensation framework. The successful candidate’s salary within this range will be determined by the number years of relevant experience they bring to the role.

The Law Center offers a comprehensive benefits package and four weeks of annual vacation.

NWLC is a non-profit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C. at our new office at 1350 Eye Street N.W. This role is based in D.C. and will be eligible for some telework while also being expected to work in person on a regular basis. The successful candidate will need to live in or relocate to the DMV (broadly defined as DC, Maryland, or Virigina).
