About AAF

Asian American Futures (AAF) is a national nonprofit organization with the mission to ensure that Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities are seen, heard, empowered and united. A key focus area of AAF is activating young AAPIs to shape a multi-racial democracy that allows everyone to thrive.

About the NHPI initiative

We seek to develop and amplify the stories told by and for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities in culture, policy and in communities.  AAF recently embarked on seminal NHPI narrative research as part of our Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) initiative with the goal to create and scale narratives that capture the imagination of young NHPI community members, and allow them to communicate these values to a broader audience. The NHPI initiative engages in research, narrative development, and experimentation in multiple modalities to innovate, generate, and catalyze narrative change. The first phase of this research has been completed and captured in a draft report.

About the Role

We are seeking a consultant to work with AAF to support the completion of our narrative research and help us plan the next phase of the initiative. Our ideal consultant has deep ties with NHPI communities, and understands the issues and dynamics affecting NHPIs. The consultant also has experience in research, planning and launching community-centered projects, and convening stakeholders to provide feedback and direction.

This six-month engagement will include the following:

  • Help finalize edits to our ground-breaking NHPI narrative research report, which is currently in draft form
  • Present findings to NHPI community organizations and other stakeholders
  • Disseminate the report through briefings, community gatherings, and written communications
  • Convene the advisory circle of NHPI community leaders, researchers, narrative practitioners and seasoned community organizations to share the findings of the report and assess next steps based on the research findings
  • Convene our cohort of NHPI grantees to share research and discuss opportunities to continue our NHPI initiative
  • Conduct a scan of NHPI stakeholders and leaders to identify how the initiative can be additive to NHPI communities and advance NHPI narrative powerbuilding
  • Develop a report or slide deck that outlines potential opportunities for AAF to advance NHPI narrative work in partnership with grassroots partners

Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working with NHPI communities and organizations, with demonstrated relationships and an understanding of the field
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills
  • A skilled facilitator who is flexible, creative, and able to build consensus across diverse audiences
  • Proven track record and deep commitment to racial solidarity with other communities of color
  • Understanding of power building and community change
  • Experience creating and sustaining partnerships and collaborations with community organizations and other stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal, and interpersonal, stakeholder relationship management, negotiation, persuasiveness, listening, and diplomacy skills
  • Self-motivated and possesses a high level of integrity
  • Possible travel within California
