El Tímpano informs, engages, and amplifies the voices of the Bay Area’s Latino and Mayan immigrants. Through innovative approaches to local journalism and civic engagement, El Tímpano surfaces community members’ stories, questions, and concerns on local and national issues, and provides news and information relevant to their needs.

El Tímpano is a growing nonprofit start-up and is a fiscally sponsored project of the 501(c)(3) Independent Arts & Media (IAM).

We are searching for an experienced fundraiser to develop and implement a major gifts and foundation grants strategy. This consultant will be responsible for researching and writing grants, submitting applications, developing relationships with major donors, tracking donations and grant funds, and preparing funder reports. The primary goal is to expand our grant funding and build a new revenue stream from major donors who believe in our mission and want to invest in our sustainability and growth.

Having won national awards and recognition for our innovative model of participatory, Spanish-language journalism, and attracted new funders who helped us more than double our revenue two years running, El Tímpano is poised for a year of significant growth and capacity-building in 2022. As we expand our team, we are seeking innovators and self-starters who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and make a difference in an organization peers have described as “an outstanding innovation model.”

Key deliverables

  • Develop and implement strategies and collateral needed to build awareness of and excitement for El Tímpano’s work and impact among prospective major donors and foundations
  • Manage events, digital communications, and/or other strategies to reach new funders and engage current ones
  • Conduct donor and foundation research, build a robust pipeline of top major donor and foundation prospects, craft and make pitches to them, and nurture and manage those relationships
  • Develop or improve El Tímpano’s donation and grant tracking system to track potential grants, funders, and contacts, maintain up-to-date records of prospects, applications, and grant reports, and complete an estimated 2-3 grant proposals per month
  • Prepare leadership for meetings with prospective funders, and draft funder reports
  • Attend a training program hosted by LION Publishers’ News Revenue Growth Fellowship and produce occasional progress reports for the Revenue Growth Fellowship
  • Manage El Tímpano’s end-of-year fundraising campaign to leverage matching funds and expand our base of individual donors

Required qualifications & experience

  • Passion for El Tímpano’s mission of advancing equitable journalism and civic engagement for and with Latino and Mayan immigrants
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, with a significant focus on grant writing and reporting and/or major donors
  • A spirit of innovation, iteration, and learning. Because major donors comprise a new revenue source for El Tímpano, we will need to experiment with different strategies and learn what works and what doesn’t.
  • A self-starter. This is the first dedicated fundraising position for the organization, which means you will be building some materials and systems from scratch, as well as leveraging resources from organizations like LION Publishers and the Institute for Nonprofit News.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication. You understand how to tell an inspiring story of El Tímpano’s work and impact in different formats and for diverse audiences.
  • Detail-oriented. Whether it comes to following up with funders, planning an event, tracking learnings, or measuring results, you pay close attention to detail
  • Ability to track outcomes, analyze and synthesize data, and convey information in a clear and compelling way

Preferred qualifications

  • Strong network and relationships with Bay Area Latino donors, philanthropic advisors, and foundations that support serving and amplifying the voices of immigrant communities

Even if you don’t have all of the qualifications listed above but feel strongly about our mission, we encourage you to apply and tell us what you have to contribute to this role. If you have any questions in advance of applying, reach out to Madeleine Bair, mbair[at]eltimpano[dot]org.

The consultancy is supported, in part, by the LION Revenue Growth program run by Local Independent Online News Publishers, and as such, the consultant is expected to take part in occasional programming among a cohort of peers to learn and share best practices in growing revenue for local news organizations.

Work is predominantly remote, but some in-person time will likely be required in the San Francisco Bay Area. Consultant will set their own hours. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for programming needs.

El Tímpano is committed to addressing inequities and dismantling the various ways white supremacy shows up in journalism as well as in organizational culture. While we’re imperfect, we are building a team with diverse life experiences that values equity, belonging, trust, and respect.
