Communications Associate (Part Time)

ROLE: COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATE (PART TIME)

LOCATION: HOUSTON, TX

Workers Defense is looking for a Communications Associate to advance our strategic media campaigns and uplift the voices and stories of our membership! In this role you will work with the Communications Director to create and implement media strategy in all three regions, with special focus on Houston and Harris County, from media relations and press releases, to social media and digital organizing tactics, that shape public opinion and raise the profile of Workers Defense.

THE ROLE IN ACTION: 

• Support WD’s media relations strategy - including pitching stories to secure placements in print, broadcast, radio, and online media that aid Houston campaign strategies
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with Houston area media outlets
• Support WD members to serve as spokespeople with the media
• You will design, execute, and track email, social media content, and other digital media tactics for organizing, legislative, and political campaigns.
• Analyze the results of digital campaigns to continually improve our effectiveness​
• Collaborate with the Communications Director and other Communications Department staff to develop digital and media strategies to achieve program goals
• Propose, produce, and lead design of digital media strategy as it relates to social media platforms, including but not limited to, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
• Utilize illustration, photography, animation, and other visual techniques to develop compelling content that increases followings and interactions
• Other Communications Department projects as assigned

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

• Experience executing successful communication plans through traditional and digital media
• Experience designing, executing, and tracking successful email, SMS, social, and other online advocacy programs
• Fluency in Spanish
• Experience working with the press and media pitching
• Demonstrated track record or propensity to thrive in a team-based collaborative environment
• Commitment to building power with marginalized communities, including working people, immigrants, and people of color
• A valid Texas driver’s license and insured vehicle

WHAT WE OFFER: 

• Workers Defense has a salary scale that is based on experience. Starting hourly pay for this position is $28 an hour. 
• A $500 annual bilingual language stipend.
• Paid vacation and sick time.
• Paid holidays in addition to office closures the week of Thanksgiving and December 23rd through 31st.
