Assistant Principal Job Description

 

Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS) has an immediate opening for an Assistant Principal interested in our innovative sustainability-education model to join us for the 2021-2022 school year. 


BUGS is a small, independent, progressive Middle School in South Slope/Windsor Terrace serving approximately 300 students of all abilities and backgrounds from across Brooklyn. Our school is at the forefront of the sustainability education, diverse-by-design and community-based schools movements. We feature a hands-on interdisciplinary education with a focus on real-world problem-solving and exploration of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Our Middle School students (grades 6 to 8) are prepared for success in high school and to become critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and thoughtful designers of a more socially just and sustainable world.

  • Celebrate middle schoolers and their voice and have a strong understanding of early adolescent development 
  • Collaborate and support colleagues and are reflective practitioners
  • Hold themselves and others accountable for students’ success in all areas
  • Regularly assess students and use the results to inform instruction
  • Actively pursue a deeper understanding of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and collaborates with colleagues to improve BUGS’s practices in DEI as we strive to repair detrimental effects of racism, discrimination & systems of oppression that affect our students, community, and country
  • Practice school-wide behavior systems that consider adolescent development and promote holistic, socio-emotional responses through restorative justice and collaborative problem solving

Selection Criteria:

  • Masters in Education required, Masters in Education Leadership and Building Leader Certification preferred
  • At least three years teaching experience with a proven track record of elevating student achievement; STEAM content highly preferred
  • At least one year of experience leading, managing, and coaching a team of adults that demonstrates ability to drive results through others
  • Data driven; understands and can coach teachers on differentiation
  • Strong collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills, including working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives
  • Strong organizational, self-management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle many responsibilities simultaneously

The Assistant Principal  is responsible for supervising teachers at BUGS including but not limited to leading adults and participating in professional development on supervision skills, as well as providing effective feedback that increases student achievement (as evidenced by Annual Teacher Performance Framework ratings etc). The AP will be responsible for overseeing school-wide initiatives such as curriculum and grading alignment, assessments, professional development,  and serving as a thought-partner for the Principal around program development, implementation, and communications. 


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support Principal to ensure adherence to systems and structures for curriculum implementation across all content areas in the following areas: unit and lesson planning, standards alignments, sustainability alignment, project-based learning
  • Support the school in the ongoing transition to  standards-based grading across all content areas.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs to establish and maintain student behavior expectations.
  • Coordinate with the Assessment Team to implement NY State exams.
  • Manage the implementation process of school-wide Interim Assessments. 
  • Manage the planning, design, and delivery of school wide professional development in order to lead school to meeting instructional goals in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to refine the structure of interventions and student assignments to maximize learning.
  • Provide hallway or classroom coverage, as needed.


School-wide Leadership

  • Lead, develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate curriculum; which includes but is not limited to the research, selection, and creation of unit and lesson plans. 
  • Oversee instructional materials selection and purchasing within the department budgets.
  • Prepare materials and reports to present data to the Executive Director (ED), Principal, and Board’s Education and Accountability Committee as requested. Attend evening board meetings related to math and science data, or other role-related items  as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students, Student Support Services Team members to develop and implement Response to Intervention systems for students who struggle with behavior.
  • Work closely with the Director of Operations and the Principal to support recruiting, hiring, and on-boarding of new teaching staff.
  • Lead academic departments: Supervise teachers and the Sustainability Program Manager. This includes regular observations and feedback, informal and formal observations, teacher evaluations, and coaching meetings. 
  • Develop and implement a process for Regents Algebra I and 8th Grade Math curriculum integration, selection of research-based mission-aligned materials and resources, and teacher implementation of curriculum.
